It's half of the chassis cost. A lot of what you pay for when you buy a mech is the engine and other equipment, though, so don't expect half of what you bought it for unless you sell all of that stuff as well.

What's the point of occupying mech bays with variants of mech that I hate and bought them only to get my favorite variant to master? It's better to get back at least some c-billls and move to new mechs (and leave bunch of equipment and engines in garage for future mechs), IMHO.

Excactly. If i didnt need to buy mechbays to store my unloved mechs i might just keep them around. But strip them and sell them...How many mechwarriors have a dozen mechs to choose from at any given point?

True, but usually I keep 2-3 variants and only sell the ones I Really hate. So far only sold CPL-C1, while keeping the K2 and C4. Depending on the MG buff, I may or may not sell the RVN-4X, but definitely keeping all of my CTF and ASD chassis.

It's half the cost of a totally stripped chassis. you can add your weapons and engine and everything else to sell to reach "real half point".
To master any mech you NEED to sell mechs to have room to do it, if you dont buy mechbays or buy MC, etc.

There are four free mech bays and eight mechs that have four variants or fewer.... so no you do not NEED to sell mechs to make room unless you are going for mastery on one of the other five.
Regardless, selling mechs is crazy inefficient. I never do it if I can avoid it.
