Last night in a match, I died. I was in my atlas I believe, and my team had i think 3 total maybe. We lost the match but it started pretty well. 2 deaths apiece.

After I died for the second or third death on my team, things went downhill, simply due to the fact a 100 tonner was lost. I was watching the screen of a teammate in what was either a LRM Catapult built or a DCD...i'm pretty sure it was a catapult.

We were on the frozen city map with all the haze, and I think it was an assult match. The 'pult I was viewing had postion near the cliffs by the cave, only able to view a small portion of the map overlooking the hill with the crashed plane.

But, I witness an inability to select a target. He kept bouncing back and forth not able to get a lock effectively making his LRMs useless. mechs would pop into view, he'd target them, then they were gone, withouth him firing a shot then he bounced to the next one that did the same thing.
So, just wanted to post on the importance of selecting target (making decisions), and positioning. His position limited his view severely. I'm not sure if he had JJ's, but sitting back being able to view that entire hill would've been much more beneficial to us. Also, on that map, use INFRARED "H" to see better through all that haze.

When I play LRM support, i really try to dump all my LRMs into the large mechs, run out of ammo, then run into the fight with my Mlas's.

Thoughts?

This is the crux of where teh skill required to be an effective Support Mech Pilot resides. say all you want about left mouse button spam or 'lock-on warrior" but if you are never where you need to be to get effective locks on priority targets and in a good position to see your round land for effect you are useless.

Being a support mech requires a good ability to move to where you are needed without exposing yourself, the good sense to pick the target that needs to be attacked, and the ability to do all you can to maintain fire for effect on targets that your team is engaging.

when playing an LRM boat;

I always position myself near some cover but on the back edge of a clear open plain... the enemy has to cross a big expanse of open battlefield to get to me so I get the maxiumum amount of time to fire on him as I can... it helps when friendlies scurry around all the side passages flushing enemies out towards my open view, I can also support them if the cover between me and the enemy is not too big, again, I can reposition to reduce the height of the cover by knowing the map and roughly where the bad guy is

I also always fit a minimum of 4 medium lasers on all of my LRM boats so that I'm not totally screwed when one of them does get too close

Not all situations will be favorable to LRM supports due to the randomness of pugs. It's better to carry less ammo and ensure that you have a couple of Large Lasers for back-up for those whack-a-mole moments when your entire team gets outmaneuvered.

Having a mix of LRMs and long-range weapons will ensure that you are never useless in a fight since you can melt some armor even if you cannot get a good lock. Large Lasers aren't bad in a brawl either. 9-18 damage > 0. <_<
