I want to know what faction is the least popular. I'm always trying to fight for the "underdog" and I can't determine who that might be. And I don't mean who's winning or losing in the canon at the time MWO is currently occupying. I mean who has the smallest player base. Some hard numbers would be nice, but I suppose we won't see those till launch. So I'll ask the forums for the undeniable truth.

So how about it? Who needs more warriors and who's the bandwagon? What insignia do I gotta brandish to draw out the most targets for unloading my weapons via the preferred method.

While it's not a causative factor, you could always look at the post count in each faction's forum... IIRC, it's House Steiner

@PewPew: I've been considering this, and was leaning towards House Steiner. It does seem to be the only sort reference to popularity on the forums that I've found. But you're right about it not being causative

@Basch: Until the clans show up, I want to play for a House. But I appreciate the suggestion and will check you Steel Cobra out.

Clan Wolverine was outright annihilated, save perhaps for some scattered remnants in the form of the so-called Minnesota Tribe. I like Wolverine, personally, and would like to see the logo included for individual customization purposes.

Don't forget that the Lyran Commonwealth gets a lot of love (and some spite :( ) from german battletech fans, of whom many are a bit lazy when it comes down to speaking english in forums all the time. i see many LCAF allegiance pics in the german forum.

Are we going by factions in the game or in the game universe itself. I am siding with the Circanus Federation if its not in game :( If its a faction in game, Rasalhague will likely be bottom although that will likely change when clans appear and people want to get in on the action. Due to that House Marik will probably end up on the bottom of the barrel due to not being a very active household for anything. They didnt take part in the clan invasion, they really did not do a lot of Sphere-wide intrigue that you hear about openly. At least Liao has a big bark even if its bite isnt very big. Marik has a pretty good bite but doesnt bark and just kind of lays on the couch.

We are the biggest underdogs of the whole universe. Davions get the most people (you know only, criteria to join is being under the average IQ level). Then, there are Clans. Every MechWarriorist goes with them (they have the best mechs and look cool, what else to say). After that go Steiner. They are joined faction with Davions and have lot in common. Only reason you see them not being active on forums is the German playerbase. Then you have Kuritans. They have a good fan base, but it is nothing special. Most devs belong there and it is for people which like samurai way of life. Mariks are the same as Kuritans (i.e. normal playerbase), but instead of samurais, they have... purple mechs. Then comes the biggest underdog in the game history, us. Everyone hates us, attacks us and steal from us. We have stupic and insane (no joking, actually) leaders and our army is mostly formed of mercs, which Davions can easily buy to attack us. We have active forums, but it is mostly because of the fact, that we try to live like actuall Capellans i.e. give 101% to everything you do. And finally, FRR. They have good weapons, support, etc. They were just on the wrong place in the wrong time and they are going to get stomped heavily (7-9 planets left) and eventually merge with one of the clans. They are really popular, though. Because Clans are not available and they are an easy ticket to be the first to become one of them.

Hope this helps. :(

It's probably the Free Worlds League / House Marik.

Not due to it being weak or having bad 'mechs, but simply due to it having flimsy fluff.

Draconis Combine is Space-Samurai
Capellan Confederation is Space-Communist-China
Lyran Commonwealth is Space-German/Gaelics
Fedsuns are Space-america-metaphor-but-not-descended-from-americans.

And even the periphery powers have gimmicks that make them kind of interesting.

The Free Worlds' League doesn't know what it wants to be. It exists as little more than a tribute to "Why democracy doesn't work in space" and the color purple... no, not the book or movie, just the color. Even their sourcebooks that I've read have felt like a chore to read, as it feels more like going through a civics and law textbook than flavor text for a science-fiction faction.

Stereotypes might seem silly, but especially in a case like the free-worlds league, you can see that we tend to feel more comfortable taking existing ideas and building off of them, rather than feel alienated when we come up with a brand new idea that isn't based on anything else.

I love the underdogs, too, and wouldn't mind making a FWL army for tabletop, but the Free Worlds' League has barely ever been so much as mentioned in the games since Mechwarrior 1.

Wait, what?

I didnt join the FRR to be some (edit: test tube sample.) I am here to stomp them back into the periphery.

Are there those that fly the FRR now that wont when the Clans come calling? Yes, but all factions have that and you know it.

Forever Free!

I'm going to echo the sentiment that as far as attracting players it's got to be Marik, they just don't get any love in the lore, but from a universe perspective I'd say the Capellans are pretty much loathed by everyone. Davion/Steiner and Kurita may hate each other but there's some healthy respect as well. The Capellans on the other hand are like that stain that's been on your floor for a while and you keep meaning to scrub it away but you keep getting distracted.

Since I had no idea about much of the universe outside of the PC games, I've got to go with house Marik. I had never heard of them before, in any serious sense. So they've got a little slice of the sphere, good for them.

Underdogs? Try the St. Ives Compact. Sure, there's some attention that gets paid to it now and again, but really... what's the point? St. Ives is basically Space-Tibet-with-terrorists to fight against Space-North-Korea (which is about the only current analog we have to the CC, as China is actually more hard capitalism with a crunchy Communist shell).

If you resided anywhere (roughly) in this area come 3050, you would be considered underdog, or assimilated. :(

Q: Least popular faction?

A: The one I choose to join.

:(

Seriously... as mentioned previously Merik is the proverbial red headed step child of the BT universe... (Or would that be the purple-headed step child?)
