So how about it? Who needs more warriors and who's the bandwagon? What insignia do I gotta brandish to draw out the most targets for unloading my weapons via the preferred method.

@Basch: Until the clans show up, I want to play for a House. But I appreciate the suggestion and will check you Steel Cobra out.

We are the biggest underdogs of the whole universe. Davions get the most people (you know only, criteria to join is being under the average IQ level). Then, there are Clans. Every MechWarriorist goes with them (they have the best mechs and look cool, what else to say). After that go Steiner. They are joined faction with Davions and have lot in common. Only reason you see them not being active on forums is the German playerbase. Then you have Kuritans. They have a good fan base, but it is nothing special. Most devs belong there and it is for people which like samurai way of life. Mariks are the same as Kuritans (i.e. normal playerbase), but instead of samurais, they have... purple mechs. Then comes the biggest underdog in the game history, us. Everyone hates us, attacks us and steal from us. We have stupic and insane (no joking, actually) leaders and our army is mostly formed of mercs, which Davions can easily buy to attack us. We have active forums, but it is mostly because of the fact, that we try to live like actuall Capellans i.e. give 101% to everything you do. And finally, FRR. They have good weapons, support, etc. They were just on the wrong place in the wrong time and they are going to get stomped heavily (7-9 planets left) and eventually merge with one of the clans. They are really popular, though. Because Clans are not available and they are an easy ticket to be the first to become one of them.
Hope this helps.

Not due to it being weak or having bad 'mechs, but simply due to it having flimsy fluff.
Draconis Combine is Space-Samurai
Capellan Confederation is Space-Communist-China
Lyran Commonwealth is Space-German/Gaelics
Fedsuns are Space-america-metaphor-but-not-descended-from-americans.
And even the periphery powers have gimmicks that make them kind of interesting.
The Free Worlds' League doesn't know what it wants to be. It exists as little more than a tribute to "Why democracy doesn't work in space" and the color purple... no, not the book or movie, just the color. Even their sourcebooks that I've read have felt like a chore to read, as it feels more like going through a civics and law textbook than flavor text for a science-fiction faction.
Stereotypes might seem silly, but especially in a case like the free-worlds league, you can see that we tend to feel more comfortable taking existing ideas and building off of them, rather than feel alienated when we come up with a brand new idea that isn't based on anything else.
I love the underdogs, too, and wouldn't mind making a FWL army for tabletop, but the Free Worlds' League has barely ever been so much as mentioned in the games since Mechwarrior 1.

Wait, what?
I didnt join the FRR to be some (edit: test tube sample.) I am here to stomp them back into the periphery.
Are there those that fly the FRR now that wont when the Clans come calling? Yes, but all factions have that and you know it.

A: The one I choose to join.

Seriously... as mentioned previously Merik is the proverbial red headed step child of the BT universe... (Or would that be the purple-headed step child?)
