I have just come out of a match where I was basically cored before I even made first contact with the enemy. Another match, I had to threaten ~my own teammate~ with my medium lasers brushing his cockpit, so he would stop shooting me in the back.

Listen... if you are a new player, there are really only two rules you need to pay close attention to:

1 - Follow your team.
2 - Shoot where they shoot.

It's pretty simple, but it gets easier. 'Accidentally hitting' your own teammate with 3 LLasers or your shiny new Gauss rifle is not funny... never will be funny and is detrimental to your team.

Also a side note - the testing grounds are the place to test your weapons. Only fire them at an enemy.

The ground is not your enemy. The rocks are not your enemy. The wall is not your enemy, nor are the dead robots on Tourmaline. Your teammates are not your enemy. There is a neat little thing called the TESTING GROUNDS where you can go and shoot to your hearts content at things that do not shoot back.

My Rear CT thanks you.

Or in less angry (justifiably so, don't get me wrong) terms, if you are going to test weapons at the start of the drop, make sure you wait until all have loaded and you have a clear field of fire (not close to clear, completely clear) :)

I accidentally placed a medium laser shot into someone once, and he went so overboard with the retaliatory fire.

I was in a Raven 4X, and had remapped the controls on my joystick. The 'target overlay' button was now weapons group 3, so when I went to see who all was in front of me I accidentally shot someone. In a Stalker. He shot me back (despite my apology), and wouldn't stop until I was dead. No skin off my back, but extremely annoying to have someone hold a grudge for what was a simple mistake.

Mistakes happen, just don't make a habit of it.

OP is a master wordsmith, kudos. That having been said, I'd gladly trade taking a backshot from a noob over having a team member who sits afk. At least the noob can sometimes be trained, but the chronic stinking afk puke should be Videodromed through his PC monitor until his head explodes. I'm not talking about dee-cees, either.

Back to the point, noob education is essential, so it's good to see it discussed here. When I first came back to MW I assumed Friendly Fire was disabled, so mistakes can be made. When I took FF later I came here, got advice, and it's served me well. Don't get your panties in a knot over a stray noob hit. Save it for the ones that crit you before loadout is 20 seconds old.

Timeless advice from a WWI Ace pilot: Fly your airspace and shoot the enemy, everything else is rubbish! So for MWO noobs, the advice would be: Stay with the team and shoot the enemy, everything else is rubbish!

Once that is mastered, you can progress to taking advantage of cover, spreading damage all over your mech, and only being seen by one enemy at a time.

Cripple them, then disconnect. Once that happens to them a few times, they will realize that being crippled at the beginning of the match is boring and they will stop doing it.

I have a really low tolerance for that stuff. Last week I crippled an Awesome for hitting me in the back once. But he was obviously doing it on purpose.

Why do you care if they shoot at the ground or rocks for fun? How is that hurting you? Maybe they are testing their weapons grouping or something. Even if they are doing it out of boredom...so what?

The only time I care at all is when they shoot at range or in the air, because it gives away our position. If they shoot at the ground I am completely indifferent.

I agree with shooting at the ground being okay to check groupings or heat. However, before firing at the ground, or into a building, check your minimap for friendlies approaching. If it's all clear, then please fire away. On a side note, I will sometimes see mechs endlessly firing ballistics into nothingness. I highly discourage this practice. Ammo is precious, use it on the enemy.

I'll confess I've had a string of friendly fire incidents. I usually forgive the first shot with just a glare. The second shot tends to get a warning. But when it comes a third time with 9 small lasers, I fired back only once. The hunchback died instantly.

He cried about it, disconnected, but hey.. Like I said to him, "Three times and you're out, I don't care if it's small lasers or AC-20s."

Lesson learned, don't do it or expect something back.

Don't point a loaded weapon at a blue guy. Period.

To add to this, for the love of god people, if someone is OBVIOUSLY engaging an enemy, try your best NOT to stagger right in front of them just because you want the kill/extra damage. That cuts off all fire from your friend, and will more than likely end in you getting a lot of damage to your back.

Also, use your damn map to see if there's someone behind you. Can't tell you how many times some moron that ran into the open suddenly decides to backpedal into me, and continue to backpedal into me even though he is clearly going nowhere. This game's basic concepts are not hard to grasp.

Doesn't matter if they are obviously engaging or not. If you walk in front of your teammate and you are within say 100m, your teammate may not see you in time to stop a trigger pull.

If you want to get on the other side of your teammate and your teammate is that close, go behind. Otherwise, it's your own fault if your backside eats an alpha strike.

I've TK'd a fairly large number of people over time as a result of that - them just walking sideways directly in front of me as I'm firing. 2 AC20's and 4 ML's in the back ***k people right up.

Seriously, though, New Players:

Be aware of where people are. While you DO want to keep moving, you need to be sure you're not going to walk immediately in front of someone else, because (particularly if they are zoomed in) they won't see you coming.
