[Speculation] Decline Of The "frozen City": Which Cause?

Most of the current maps are still inhabited when the fighting starts and show at least some signs of recent life.
The only place that seems utterly abandoned is frozen city.
Especially during the night, it even feels kind of haunted.
It has been bugging me forever that there apparently is no explanation for why this huge city has been abandoned.
What happened, was it a disaster or a war, a collapse of the economy?
Where did the inhabitants go, or did they all perish there?
Has anyone found a possible reason and could solve this mystery?

The planet still has 1 billion inhabitants, though.

something is still there that must be important, but i dunno what... i think it was paul or some other PGI guy who said something about this during CBT in some lost thread... who knows

so i agree, they really should push out some background infos about the maps...

Before the Succession wars this planet used to house some of the brightest minds and researchers of the Star League era. Over time, much of the planet was destroyed by the in-fighting between the successor states, and many Star League tech was lost and buried under the nuclear winter. A few months ago, a salvage team was conducting geological surveys on the mostly inhospitable planet when they uncovered an underground complex, buried kilometers deep within the planet's crust. Further analysis revealed that the design was Star League in origin, perhaps a storage or research site, and the message was quickly sent back to command for further orders.
Unfortunately, the signal was intercepted by other forces, and the successor states began making their move. A transport ship containing enemy mechs was intercepted and shot down not too far from where the complex is a few hours back, and fighting has begun to break out over the system where this planet inhabits.
Your job is to intercept the enemy mechs already deployed there, and neutralize the area before we can land additional ground forces for support.
.....
.....
How's that for a potential reason why there's fighting on the godforsaken planet?

Planet is still inhabited, so the city was simply abandoned. Chances are, from the building we can see stuck in the glacier, that the weather in that area of the planet became very bad, and the citizens had toe evacuate and leave the city to be swallowed by the ice and snow.
A search through Sarna returned no planets with the proper criteria (time to jump point: 16.1, position in system: 5, satellite: Jagga), so I couldn't dig up any other information on the planet besides what the map page tells us.

A lone mechwarrior by the name of Perkins failed in his duty to protect the city's lone thermal vent couple.
Even though he was piloting an the mighty Raven battlemech he could not stop a pirate assault lance from destroying it.
"Perkins what the hell are you doing get in there and stop that lance."
"I, I'm trying sarge, but I'm having a bit of a problem.
"Perkins we don't have time for problems stop those mechs!"
"Wait a minute are you using the stupid keyboard and mouse setup."
"Er yeah sarge installed it this morning was working fine."
"Aw crap on a autocannon you moron, that a freaking battlemech not a blasted battledesk!"
"It's the latest thing sarge."
"Well Perkins your thing is hangin in the wind!"
"KitCat drop some cover fire we are outta here right and now!"
"What about me sarge?"
"Hope ya paid your premiums you *****."
According to related audio and video evidence the pirate assault lance could not manage to lay a single hit
on the spiraling Raven battlemech.
Shortly thereafter after watching the Raven single handedly take down 3 assault mechs.
The uncontrollable Raven careened over a nearby hill and vanished.
The sole remaining pirate then destroyed the thermal couple.
Leaving the city to a slow frozen death.
