I'm new to MWO and I can't find out why the Atlas AS7-D variant has one more ballistic than the Atlas AS7-RS. That seems like the only difference and if so, why is the RS variant even there. Seems like a pathetic way to screw newbs more, unless there is a difference in where hardpoints are located. If thats so, then where can I conveniently find that out?

Yes, hardpoints are located in different places. This site has all hardpoints, plus their locations:

To answer your specific question, the RS has 4 energy slots in the arms, and the D has 2 energy slots in the arms, and 2 in the center torso, where there isn't room to put in as much. You can only mount 3 large lasers in the D, or 2 PPCs, while you could mount 4 of either of them in the RS.

(Of course, all you really want right now is the DDC because of how powerful ECM is, but that's not what you asked.)

Before you ask, the reason for the Atlas K is the double AMS. Incredibly useful before ECM. Still very useful in a large group when ECM isn't present.

I didn't expect such a fast response, thank you for both of your responses, both are very helpful.

What do you mean? Is it because the variant DDC has an extra module, that allows another ECM fit?

DDC is the only Atlas (OK, the only 'Mech over 40 tons) that can mount ECM. It's not a module, it's a piece of equipment like Beagle. And since it's really powerful, and sized to fit inside much smaller 'Mechs, it's easy to find a spot for in a 100-tonner.

Any specific reason why the Atlas DDC is the only mech allowed to run the ECM that isn't light? :P

Again, thank you for your responses. I have been enjoying MWO for some time now, still learning.

Only certain variants were given ECM options, no reasons as to why those specifically were given.

The Cicada 3M is a medium mech that also runs ECM, but yes it would still lean towards the lighter side.

No real reason -- I guess because the DDC is supposed to be a command 'Mech, that's supposed to have a commander inside? The DC is for "Dual Cockpit" and stock comes with a Command Console where a second person would sit, so I guess it gets ECM because it's supposed to be doing EW/IW/C3 things, but most of that isn't implemented yet. There's a few other variants that ought to get it, for example the Stalker-3F has a subvariant that mounts ECM by default. (I theorize that the next Hero's gonna be a Stalker w/ ECM)

Except for the Raven there's no reason for any Mech to carry ECM :) Pre-ECM I drove the DDC for it's 3 Missile-Hardpoints. Still Hoping for an Atlas-Hero Mech. Since we have no Assault Hero yet, it's high time and I hope it's not another Stalker. That would be boring if it hasn't at least Ballistic-Hardpoints :)

The RS can do some amazing feats no other Atlas can. Four large lasers? Four PPCs? The energy points in the arms instead of the torso can make some novel builds the K can never make.
