I still have yet to play around with all the weapons (especially ballistics, since I've been playing Jenners) but I have noticed that lasers have a longer range than what it says on the HUD. Medium lasers are said to be 270m, but I've had them do damage at least as far as 400m.

So what's the deal? Is there just a damage drop-off after 270m or is the HUD just completely inaccurate? Does this happen with other weapons that you know of?

Those are max damage values you will notice that they will turn green when aiming at a target inside that range or yellow if it's outside of it. In the yellow zone the damage will fall off to a considerably lower damage. PPCs are an exception to this rule. They fall off at a distance under 90m and a distance of 540m they will continue to do damage out to 1080m but the damage is at or lower then that of a small laser once it reaches 1080m.

This is a good site to check because it lists the range values for weapons. You can see a medium laser has a max range of 540m.

The range shown for each weapon is the best and most efficient range for it. But weapons have a much higher range at the cost of their damage (2x for energy weapons, 3x for ballistic weapons).
Some weapons like PPC (not ERPPC) have a minimum range (90m) and they will do 0 damage at point blank.
LRMs do no damage below 180 meters.

There is a helpfull guide with all the details here.

LoL I beat you. And unless Ohms fixed a bunch of stuff some of the values on his sheets are outdated or wrong.

Also missiles function slightly differently then a table shows. For example an SRM6 deals 15 damage total but this is spread by the missile grouping as well as the explosion of the missile as it hits. So basically each missile that you see does 2.5 damage spread over a surface as it explodes. PPCs also have a "splash effect" on impact but most of the damage is done at point of impact with little in terms of over lapping damage. They are really good at crits but not at eating through armor unless brought in groups of 3 or more.

I keep hearing that PPC's 'splash', but I have not had this experience at all. In my experience, they're like shooting an AC10 with better bullet speed and better range, with infinite ammunition.

That's what I believe, too. They are buffing the PPC though. Perhaps it will get splash damage then :)

Another site for weapon stats. This site pulls info directly from the game files, so it updates as fast as possible .

I believe you meant that LRM's do no damage WITHIN 180 meters. If the did no damage BEYOND 180 meters, they wouldn't be LRM's...
