Last night I was driving my 5v during a close match. All that was left was a Cat and me. The Cat had 2 AC20's and Med Lasers with an orange torso, while I had my ER Large Laser and was pretty banged up from a dual with a commando but still yellow. We danced around for a bit and I managed to get out 450m and thought I totally got this! (Med and AC20's are 270m) Then my brain apparently decided to lock firmly in noob mode and I STOPPED. Spider. 450m from enemy. You can guess how that worked out.
Now I will write 100 times on teh Internets:
I will NEVER stop my light to take a shot
I will NEVER stop my light to take a shot
I will NEVER stop my light to take a shot
I will NEVER stop my light to take a shot
I will NEVER stop my light to take a shot
. . . etc.
Apologies To My Team

Yep, you have to remind yourself that the weapon "ranges" are optimal ranges and while the damage drops off after that things like AC 20s lose a point of damage every 27 yards past that... At that range it is still doing the damage of a Gauss round.
I've done the same thing before.
AC 20 means close range... I'm 500+ yards away.... Oh crap my torso just went red.

The AC20 is surprisingly good at bigger ranges, back in CB i had one Atlas using them at 450m and making good damage with it.
I hope most people will never find out...
