I hear these terms over and over but I am not sure what they mean.

PUGs, I think, is a runaway rogue mech that wants to play Doom with robots,

Premade, I have no idea, Thought it was Hero mechs but it does not seem that way.

Please explain the MWO jargon ;)

Cheers!

PUG = Pick Up Game which refers to anyone who logs into the game and just hits the Launch button. The game will put you in a match with a random group of people.

Premade = A group of individuals who choose drop together as a group. This is done by hitting the Social button, rather than the Launch button.

Because Premade groups often have voice comms, their increased level of coordination is often a huge advantage.

At the end of a match, the match Summary shows little Shield icons next to those who are part of a premade group, which are Founders tags.

The issue of PUG's vs. Premades is a hot topic for some, so you can expect some rather interesting responses to your question.

EDIT: Thanks to feedback from others, the little shield icons mentioned previously indicate Founders tags.

Thats partialy right.
Premade groups are 2-4 or 8 players droping as a "premade group" by using the Groupfunktion of the social tab, right so far.
The little Icons on the score board are Founders. These shields are smal versions of the one you can see on the side near my name.
THEY ARE NOT NESSISARILY PREMADES.
They can be PUGs or prmades as every other player.

Ah, got it. I edited my original post to reflect that. Thanks.

And you can choose not to show the Founder's tag, so it is completely unreliable as a premade indicator.

Just in before you get the wrong, idea, there is nothing wrong with PUG play. A lot of people prefer it, actually. Just know that playing with friends you can talk to is a very different experience. I'd recommend at least trying it sometime.

Exactly. I like to not show mine. It helps add insult to injury when the team that beats an 8 man sync drop was a cluster of pugs. Even if one or more were founders or pre-founders like myself (in closed beta before the program).

Keep in mind that until PGI applies a tonnage limit to drops, the 8 man premade groups will tend to sync 4 man drops because practicing tonnage specific drop formats is a waste of time in the 8 man system because no system is in place to stop 5 assault and 3 heavy from dropping against 2 light, 2 medium, 2 heavy and 2 assault (as an example). Where as syncing the 2, 4 man groups, has a chance to line up the 8 man group (2, 4 man groups) against a similar weight composition (the 8 random solo players who hit launch on their own).

Having microphone communication is key in this game. Even if everyone on a team is a random pilot and all sticking close together, chances are they lose to any group using voice com's because if nothing more, they can call out a primary damage target. That alone will tip the favor of balance more times than not.
