Adding this line to the user.cfg really makes you feel like the pilot instead of the mech...

cl_fov = 80

The developers should really consider adding a new field of view slider bar to the Options Menu. This would let players choose to see more of the cockpit or the HUD (w/out messing with cfg file). The default is below...

cl_fov = 60

Pretty sure the default is more like 70 or 75. 60 is the minimum AFAIK.

I use like 90 or something...much better peripherial vision...makes it easier to weave in and out of urban areas.

also iirc cryengine's cl_fov changes the vertical fov, so different aspect ratio monitors may do better with different fov's.

and remember, while bigger fov's may make you feel like you're in the cockpit since you can see all your instruments, it also "shrinks" your viewing area in many cockpits. in other FPS's without this limitation i tend to prefer something a bit higher (~80-85 ballpark), but since your useful visual field is restricted by the cockpit, i tend to go for the lowest FOV that gives me the entire cockpit (which happens to be 70-75 for most mechs)

I run 85 or so. I like it much better, however it light mechs it doesn't work as good. Your "head" almost leaves the cockpit if you twist real fast.

That is because vertical fov of 60 (default) with a 16:9 aspect ratio gives a 90 degree horizontal field of vision.
I don't see much reason to change this a lot, as it makes for more difficult sniping if you increase the fov too much.

Personally I used 75 while using a 16:10 display, which gives a horizontal fov of approximately 100 degrees. Got a 16:9 display but didn't bother to change it, so now my horizontal fov is about 107 degrees. It could be a little less...
