It was a night like any other on the planet Enif in the Draconis Combine. It was a boring night. For months now, Adeth had been watching HPG news uplink transmissions describing yet another sighting and attack by the newest scourge of the Inner Sphere: The Premade. Adeth, like many others, was outraged at the efficiency of The Premade and was in awe of how something could be so effective, vicious and destructive in one fell swoop. So filled with rage, Adeth waited and hoped for a chance to face The Premade... but was also fearful for his own life... you see... he had heard of The Premade before...

As a child, Adeth's paw-paw told stories of the first Premade... a band of warriors from the planet of "DevTeam" whose goal it was to spread a message of knowledge... to provide information about coordination, teamwork and communication throughout the Inner Sphere in the hopes that it would lead to a golden age for all mankind. If his paw-paw were to be believed... The Premade were not a bad thing at all! This left Adeth struggling with the beliefs he was taught as a child which were in stark contrast to the things he saw/read on the HPG news in current times.

Then... it happened. The antique radio left to him by his paw-paw, made by the Teamspeak corporation which sat idle on the mantle of Adeth's fireplace came to life... lighting the room with a dim glow. Adeth could hear voices coming from the antique radio... but who were these voices?! These were not voices of the city watch comm towers, to be sure.

Suddenly, every alarm across the city went off. Explosions could be heard off in the distance. The city was under attack! Adeth whirled around to look back at the radio... the voices... could they be... The Premade?! Could this old antique left by paw-paw somehow be connected to The Premade? Adeth could hear his paw-paw's voice clearly.. "You know what you need to do! Now do it!" Adeth ran pell-mell out the door to his mechbay, where his 50-ton Centurion (also a gift from his paw-paw) waited.

"Reactor... Online... Sensors Online.. " Adeth powered up his mech. He feverishly began to type out a message to any friendly forces that they were under attack by The Premade. His hud lit up with responses from 7 localized friendlies, all of whom were ready to fight. Remembering what his paw-paw taught him, Adeth began to coordinate his newly found team. He knew what they needed to do to win. They needed to band together and focus fire on targets. He setup a defensive position along the G-Line of the map-grid and ordered all to switched to enhanced imaging. As the explosions began to get closer, Adeth feverishly typed instructions to his team.

"I will call targets! ALPHA BRAVO... you get it?!? FOCUS your fire! STAY together! WE CAN WIN!"

As he looked up, the first of the enemy mechs entered the firing zone - a scout. "ALPHA" Adeth typed. With that, a hail of weaponry fire erupted from his and the 7 mechs around him obliterating the enemy scout with a single attack. Laser and ballsitics fire came from the right side of the line, shearing off the arm of a Hunchback who had been on that end of the line. At the same time, a Catapult came into the frame directly in front of the team firing AC20s. His first round caused critical damage to the Stalker's leg directly to Adeth's left.

"BRAVO! CAT!" Adeth typed. Again, the weaponry fire erupted from the mechs around him, causing critical damage to the Catapult. The pilot, seemingly knowing he made a mistake, stopped his advance and turned while backing up in an attempt to protect his center torso. The second barrage from the defensive line cored the catapult and sent its escape pod blasting up into the atmosphere. The hunchback at the right side of the defensive line however, was not so lucky. The 2 Atlas that had flanked to the right handled the Hunchback quickly; it now lay as a slag pile on the ground.

The 2 Atlas continued to fire... bringing to bear ECM along with Ultra AC 5. Adeth could not target either of the Atlas to give them a designation... so he did the only thing he could. "ATLAS! LEFT SIDE!" The Catapult which had been next to the dead Hunchback was attempting to back up to put some distance between itself and the 2 Atlas, however it was no match for the dakka which it faced. As the mech crumpled over, its escape pod flew up into the atmosphere like a bottle rocket... opening a parachute at the top of its arc, allowing the pilot to live to fight another day.

The remaining mechs targeted the left side Atlas as Adeth wished... and quickly it fell... but not before killing another friendly mech. The team turned their attention to the remaining Atlas. Adeth noticed that the legs had quite a bit of damage "FOCUS LEGS!" he typed. Almost instantly... the Atlas exploded when the critically damaged stalker next to Adeth fired a volley of SMR6 and 4 LLAS into the legs, causing an ammo explosion.

As all this went on, the defensive line was under indirect fire from LRMs. Adeth brought up his map and ordered a flanking manuever for the remaining mechs. Off they went... a unit who wasn't a unit at all... banded together behind one person who decided to lead.

They moved through the city towards their targets. Adeth knew they'd have support as well... at least a few heavies or assault brawlers. Another Catapult stepped right out into the line of fire... blasting Adeth in the center torso with dual LBX 10. This time however, Adeth didn't even have a chance to order the focus fire... an AC20 round from the stock hunchback behind him flew directly into the cockpit of the Catapult, killing the pilot instantly.

The remaining enemy mechs - 2 LRM support, a light and a medium fell quickly with very little intervention on Adeth's part. In less than 15 minutes, a team was assembled, coordinated and won a battle against what Adeth knew were the toughest foes out there... The Premade.

After the battle, Adeth went back to his house to further examine the antique radio left on his mantle. Its lights were still lit, probably because of the proximity of the enemy mechs who had the technology. He picked up the radio and for the first time opened it up... and to his surprise... the electronics inside were so simple... he knew what he had to do. Adeth decided to make duplicates and hand the radio out to all 'Mech pilots on Enif should there ever be another attack by The Premade. Never again will his planet be unprepared when having the tools to win could be so simple. Adeth knew that the radio was not required to defeat The Premade... but having more tools at one's disposal to do a job more easily was something his paw-paw always taught him to do.

Be like Adeth.

also if you read it and understand the concept of 'sub-text' this is a very appropriate contribution to an ongoing discussion about approaches to playing MWO in which half of the people are wrong... you know who you are. :D
