Hit and run. I do not engage unless it is to confirm a kill.

Mainly hit and run as well as supporting the assaults to keep pesky lights off them.

Depends on the 'mech and loadout, really.

Hit and run in the spider, cicada, Hunchback 4P, or try to outmanoeuvre enemy if forced to fight.

Light hunting in Hunchback 4SP, couple of Dragon Variants.

Cataphract 4X, snipe as long as possible, if forced into close combat, try to take enemy mech down as quickly as possible. Can't run away.

Cataphract 2X and 3D are for brawling.

I usually find the largest 'mech in our unit and tag along with and slightly behind that 'mech. I concentrate fire on his targets or cover his back from fast lights and mediums. I rarely get kills this way, unless I crit something that he was firing at, but I have a high kill assist score. I also tend to favor using TAG so that I can call in long range fire (this puts me at 750 metres or closer to the target) so I am exchanging medium range fire.

When I am scouting in light 'mechs my targets are other lights, to keep them away from our heavy and assault 'mechs, and then spotting Long-range sniper or LRM 'mechs (again with TAG). Since I am playing a pure scout, not a Skirmisher, I favor sensor equipment over weapons so I am usually lightly armed - the only benefit of this is I never overheat.

4P dbl ppc sholder mount hunch doin driveby's has to be my favorite so far. Have mastered atlas, cataphract, hunch, and currently working on my jenners. Gotta say my 90km driveby hunch is my fav. People dont know what hit em when they take 2ppc's in the butt, whip around and there's noone to be found, only to take it again from the opposit side. One shot a gauss cata in river city night from under the bridge about 20 seconds into the match with that build, lucky crit to be sure but still quite satisfying hearing "nice shot" so quickly into a match. On the other hand my buddy plays the same mech with 9mlas and swears by it, 3-4 kills a match most of the time, although neither of us are very effective playing each others builds. To each their own!
My ballistic hunch with a gauss is a lot fun although extremely volatile, one odd crit and im done. I see many people brawling with gauss and it is quite simply not a good idea. If you roll gauss, stay the hell off the frontline!

never touched anything but atlas.
i mostly equip varied range weapons.
1- target from long range
2- flank with a group of 3 or 4 and fight up close in a brawl(if possible)

if i'm with my group, we usually flank, nest a position (between buildings) and one lures the enemy towards us.

I'm a light pilot. I've always been a light pilot. I'm thinking of moving on to mediums pretty soon here but... I'm not sure if I can be comfortable under 90 kph (I get a little edgy even when I'm in the mid nineties...).
I like speed and firepower.
I started with a Jenner-f with 6 mlas, but I quickly upgraded to 6 mpl. The extra damage and shorter duration was totally worth the weight, and I didn't spend much time at range anyway. I tried a little scouting (back in the days when having a dedicated scout was more of a thing), but I grew more into the role of what I understand to be called a Striker. Low time on target, high damage, high speed, and 'oh-gods-I-hope-no-one-manages-to-hit-me' (easier when I was lagsheilded, but I didn't learn to play presuming I'd be lagsheilded. Served me well with that last patch.).

The next two Jenners helped a lot in the role of striker as I realized the glory of srms. I still run my 4 mpl, 2 srm 4 Jenner.

I then picked up a Raven-4x. I have never had so much fun in this game before. I started with an AC/10 and a few lasers. The single target burst damage was wonderful. I could dodge around the enemy team, in and out of cover and peg them in the back with my AC. I continued that practice with a medium laser (though, now that I'm thinking, I should probably go two smalls...) and an AC/20. I took a hit in speed since I couldn't mount the xl245 I'd been trading around my 'mechs, and the decreased sustain damage changed things a little for my style. It was a lot harder to dodge around and harass, and due to my speed and the amount of skill required to hit something moving ~100+ kph while the weapon is moving ~92... I was very vulnerable to other lights. I eat mediums though. Mediums are tasty. The build is really best as a finisher though. I really only do one thing with it well: I destroy partially weakened components, either finishing or crippling the 'mech. I love it. I plug something with my gun, something explodes, and I dance away before I suffer any repercussions. Rinse repeat.

I... tried the 3L. I don't like it. The 4x is by far my favorite raven, and the 2x just feels like a weak Jenner. I'm currently working on chewing my way threw basics on the 3L but I can't do it for any period of time before loosing interest. I mean... ecm is cool and all, but the arm missile hardpoint is not really useful for anything other than ssrms (which I understand are powerful, especially if the carrier is clever about switching bbetween disrupt and counter) I just... think they are less fun. I'm currently working on some other stuff to try to make the 'mech more interesting for me. I'm currently thinking double erppc, which oddly enough is better for my up-close approach. If I get enough of the right skill, I'll drop back to double ppc when I can keep a decent distance. I just... really miss my single hit burst damage.

Uhm... so... for you TL;DR people who still actually care: I like fast strikers.

Brawling is the best way to get killed. Unless you have a turn speed advantage were you can hide behind the opponent then it is a valid tactic. Obviously if you're an atlas...well you can't do much if people get near you. Otherwise with my 3D I would just land on a rooftop and shoot from up. Because no one ever looks up.

See what I like to do is target a mech and start shooting at it, unless someone else kills it. In that case I'll target another mech and start shooting that one.

I like midrange sniping the most. I use my Elmo to blast away with a ton of UAC5s or my 2ppc hbk 4p to slap careless fools.

On the flip side, I like flying in and toasting enemies with a five srm6 stalker. It usually one hit kills little mechs

I am probably a harrasser, skirmisher, raider - i dont like brawling and i want my Mech having 2 or 3 different weapon types.
I like the whooosh of the missiles so i want at least have an LRM10 on my Mech, il ike that i can distribute some firepower from the range to hotspots.
Lasers be the backbone of my direct fire weaponry as they need no ammo and are futuristic - the LPL has the coolest sound of them.

I like the Centurion and atm play around with an Awesome 9M to find out if its any good.
I like the LBX and MGs bcs of the "Freakfactor".
I accept that SSRM be the Anti-Light-Weapon and that its neccessary to put the almost biggest possible engine in each Mech for bringing so much advantages with it.

I dont like Flamer, PPC, AC/Gauss, SRM and avoid them whenever possible.
I sold all my ECM Mechs (tested the Raven and Cicada) bcs its poor gameplay - especially combined with SSRM.
I sold my K2 with 2LL and 2 LPL that did extremely well bcs it was so boring.

I like to "win" and feel that winning is the "proof" that you did something "right" but imho "winning without fun" equals "losing".

I'm becoming more like the op. I always struggle to tame the moron urge to just wade in guns blazing. I try to enact coward brawling as I call it. Stay hidden from the LRM boats until we engage then duck in and get some shots on target. Get out find a new spot and repeat. Sometimes the red mist comes down and I walk slowly forward firing at CT till one of us dies

Sniping is fun in theory, but Brawling up close is the most fun for me. You get to actually see all the laser scars and sparks and explosions.

I find myself piloting a Centurion most of the time. I tend to blast away with my long-range weapons (ER PPC and UAC/5 are my choices) and when a brawl comes my way to open up with medium lasers and SRMs.

Did you need that side torso? Guess not. If, he has a standard engine, more ammo to waste on his face.

up, close, and personal the only way to fly

Mid-long range direct fire support. Escort/skirmisher. Largely depends on what chassis I'm playing but I'm not fond of straight up brawling.

In fps games i'm usually a recon/sniper, so in MWO i prefer long-range fighting.
Unfortunately my favourite weapons are ERPPC's, pulse lasers, and LRM's which are all subpar weapons so i'm stuck with gauss, AC's, and SRM's :(
