Perhaps this is more appropriate for the teamspeak 3 forums themselves, but i can't for the life of me figure out how to network through teamspeak...although it might just be that nobody is online for the specific group i'm with.
Any advice for someone completely technologically inept on getting started on teamspeak?

If you give me a little bit more info on what you're after I can either help you or point you to someone who can.

Literally just figuring it out. How do I know whether or not anyone's in a specific group at a time, and how do I specifically message them to arrange a match or whatnot?

Once you run through the initial TS setup, You'll need to pick a server.
Until you find one you like, try this one:
Go to "connections" tab and then select "Connections" Then enter this data in the pop up:
Comstar Relay North America (Comstar NA)
NickName is "your name here"
Address: na1.mech-connect.net
Password: WordofBlake
You'll land in the "entry", you won't be able to talk here. But look down to "looking for drop" and double click to join that channel. Usually someone will be along to grab you within a few minutes.
