I have been playing since the game went open beta and was and still am completely new to the mechwarrior franchise and lore. Well i did play MW4 but i hated it. I know shock horror, i was only really into sports games and playing sports and being a bit of a lad. I have found since i have grown up I have found my inner nerd big time.

So what do i think of the game? Well i love it, the mech design is awesome and the combat is tactical and requires skill. Having said that the new player experience needs work because if it was not for the fact i could see the potential in this game i may have left because i was useless. The trial mechs were horrible and for about 20 games i thought when i fired four lasers i was doing 20 damage straight away and didnt realise that different parts of mechs had different armour points. The game really needs a tutorial of sorts to explain this and about aiming for the legs of lights etc etc.

I only play solo because i was nervous about letting down a team and being crap so after 884 games i finally have a positive k/d ratio but why are assists not counted in the stats? Lots of times if i am in my Ilya and see a hunchback with 68 small lasers i fire my gauss into the huge shoot my many weapons at once spot and once i have destroyed it i move on to the next mech because i feel chasing a guy who has 2 small lasers is not useful to my team.

The pugging experience can be brutal at times even with just a 4 man premade on the other team. I dont want to stop this but why is there not VOIP that is simple and effective because even if someone doesent want to use a mic they can still hear the plan and hear warnings about being flanked. Are they going to implement a proper VOIP? I hope so. Also a coomunication wheel like on dota 2 would be excellent and easy to implement with the person saying it pinging on your minimap.

So after all this jumbled mess of a post what is my conclusion? Well i left out ECM, bigger maps and streaks because I have seen the devs post that they are working on it, so we just have to wait and see. Overall i love this game and have played it nearly as much as i have played fifa, PES and football manager which is a lot. It has proplems for new players and the communication between a pug team is difficult and pretty crap. They need to do more sales of MC. So far i have dropped £30 into the game and that was at christmas because it has 20% extra. They need more of these MC deals and more often because then i would spend more of it on camo and cockpit items because i would know a new sale is just round the corner.

So thanks for reading my incomprehensible post, there was too much i wanted to talk about and i got a bit lost. haha. Also if anyone in the UK knows of how to get the tabletop version of mechwarrior one that is good for beginners i would love to know. Also what book is good to start with? I should have paid attention in the 80's.

Sounds like a fair assessment of the game, definitely agree on the need for in-game (e.g. hands on) tutorial!

By chance, had you also seen the tutorial videos? For example: http://mwomercs.com/...deo/Qf4j_WWQkOY

kudos for taking the time to get to know the game before making an overall decision. As ever, the concerns are what are awash in the forums right now, but the devs seem aware of what need to be implemented.

Not sure what you mean by table start version of MW1...

Welcome!

don't let anything put you off from trying - there's no real requirements to join many teams (such as the one in sig), if you like it then keep at it but if you discover you prefer pugging then stick to that, either is fine

other than that - there's a whole new stats system coming in over the next few weeks

Oh i mean the tabletop game what little plastic mech and hexagons. Is it even still for sale in the UK? My inner nerd demands lore so i love everyting zombie and vampire but when i saw the depth of mechwarrior lore an instant nerd ***** occured. So i am after the books but dont know what place to start and the tabletop game.

I also just want to add I started this thread because i was in caustic and saw a HBK-4P about 400m away and i was in my Ilya with two gauss and three ML. I waited for paper doll to come up and his right torso had no armour so about 400 games ago i would have just fired but i fired my lasers into his back and waited for him to turn around and bang he was dead. Must have been running an XL. I just let out a small yes which my cat thought was odd and thought this game is fricking awesome.

I would recommend The Blood of Kerensky Trilogy to see what's going on currently according to the MWO timeline.

I'd played a lot of MechWarrior but mostly single player
(Compstomps instead of pugstomps?) So it's taken me a while to become not terrible. It's definitely rewarding when you do get the hang of it. If you want to really embrace your nerd side, pick up one of the technical traps from the table top game.

I can't help you with the starting up some table top action besides recommending looking up a starter set on amazon or googling for a battletech table top forum to look for a local gaming area. What I can do is reccomend you check out mech warrior tactics. Its a browser game that is basically a more streamlined version of the table top game. As a warhammer table top player I can saythat not being able to build and paint your own models takes away from it abit but its in beta and its still fun.

try asking google for "mechforce uk"... i know the german mechforce is still active, and i doubt BT is dead in the UK...

*Mechforce is/ was some kind of "fanclub" like organisation who planned and started tournaments, where BT players met up and so on... there was large number of international organisations like this during the 90´s until early 2000´s i think, but mechforce was the largest i know of...

edit: oh never mind... as far as i can see, MF germany is the last one active, but with rising member numbers and activities... dunno what happened to the UK guys though, but there HAS to be something available :D

And if you don't want to have to learn ALL the rules and figure out what your modifier to hit that Jenner that went 9 hexes this turn, in light forest, with both your Medium Lasers and your LRMs... There is a computer version of the TT game put together by loving fans.

Welcome to MWO :D

Not sure what you mean by "tabletop version" - you pretty much only need to know the rules and have gaming dice. You can download MegaMek, which is an online version of the tabletop game (can also be played vs. an AI bot).

I would start with The Blood of Kerensky trilogy, you can see the full list of novels here along with short descriptions of what each book is about.
