So, I've searched the forums and google for an answer but I'm coming up empty handed. Seems there's just too many complaint posts without much real information in them.
My question is this: From what I can tell, the matchmaker tries to put 4man pre-made in matches with other 4man premades then uses pugs to fill the gaps. What if it's just me and one friend grouping together and playing? Is that still going to auto-drop us with a 4man? Since that's the group 'class' we're forced to use? Or will it put us against a 2person group + pugs? Or just pugs?
Fact is, I believe there is an advantage to groups, especially for those who use voice coms, due to higher degrees of coordination if nothing else. My friend and I arn't super-pilots, so I'm just wondering how much of a disadvantage we're at when qeueing together as opposed to seperate.

As far as I know (900 or so so games played), there is no deeper logic going into matchmaking right now other than that 8-man teams are separate from everyone else. I believe they take 4,3,2,1 person groups and just slap them together as quickly as possible to form a drop.
I could be wrong, but I haven't seen anything to suggest it's more complex than that at this point. And you and your friend should ALWAYS drop together, and get one some voicechat. Even better, get on the Comstar TS and grab two other random people to form a whole lance. Then you can experience the game much more like it is intended.

Sometimes that doesn't happen, and then there is a pure pug group against a four man and four pugs. So you're partially right in the way that if there is a group of four or less people, the pugs are the filler. The matchmaker is being worked on, this is only phase 2. I would stay grouped with him if you can, it doesn't really matter if you're seperate or not since you're more likely to either not play in the same match or be on opposite sides if you're not grouped with him. I think that's the goal, but it doesn't do a very good job of doing it.
Edit: What Zeh says. Plus based on mech class each side has.

Good to know, thanks for the quick response. We use skype to communicate together but due to our random playtimes we've had bad luck in the past trying to maintain connections with other players enough to reliably form larger teams.
I'd love to see an appearance of more MMO-like social features. A lobby to chat in before entering matches, for example, or in-game VOIP. Those are typically the only way we manage to get together larger groups in other games we play.

Those are also being worked on. Stay tuned to the Command Chair and Ask the Devs and the various roadmaps they have out (pretty sure those are in the Command Chair too). Those usually are updated every so often if things changed. Just keep in mind that those are target dates and are not set in stone, such as the life of game development (or anything anymore).
