Your friend is incorrect.... As far as I know there is no reduction in explosion damage when moving from one component to the next... And I've never seen that idea anywhere in my time since I got into closed beta in July... And I spend a lot of time reading the forums.

As for the ammo depletion order... See this awesome pinned topic from the Guides section:
http://mwomercs.com/...mmo-being-used/

The order is:

HD --> CT --> RT --> LT--> LA --> RA--> LL--> RL

Hmmm I wonder what made them decide on that order, anyway thank you for the information.

From a realistic physics point of view:

Your ammo was hit. It caught on fire. Rounds started going off and one of them happened to launch on a trajectory that sent it bouncing around under your armor.
It passed harmlessly through your side torso, missing all vital internals, before impacting on your engine and detonating.

Happy to contribute nothing to this discussion! Peace!

I bet you are the type of person that thinks throwing a bullet into a fire is like playing spin the bottle with a loaded gun :D All kidding aside, the only way for 100% of the explosive damage to tranfer continuously is to treat the mech's arm like a massive, equisitely crafted gun barrel forcing ALL of the explosion through the mech on a direct trajectory toward the CT. Even in that case it would still not be the absolute 100% because of the friction along the sides of the "barrel" and distance traveled. But, this isn't a finely crafted gigantic gun barrel. It's a structurally compromised armored arm full of motors and electrical components and whatever else you managed to fit in there. Assuming it was stored past the bend in the arm alone could make almost ALL of the explosive force just blow out the elbow and filter out harmlessly (to the rest of your mech anyway) into the air.
