Oh I see. Thats interesting, Volume. Good at least that mechs are available by rank. I'd still like to start out as a light mech simply because it builds character with the game in a sense that you'd appreciate it more for the time and effort put into achieving it. If heavies are available right off the bat (even zeuses etc.) It simply makes people appreciate the game less cause they didn't put much effort into achieving it. To much caterring to the instant gratification masses (generation) will just end up backfiring unless you are tailoring a game to have a "shelf-life" then move on to the next project (I hope not).
But then again the quick fix to that is simply by offering said mechs as unlockables through real $ in which case they will be kept from moving on to another game or loosing interest to quickly.

If chosing prefared mech would be a Raven but would much prefare to see some sort of blind or random mech assaignment.
Few possabilities would be answering some questions like in RPGs such as Ultima 7 and Morrowind or a character creater similar to the old BT RPG where it is based on chance.
Best compromise might be stating prefared and least wanted weapon systems, min speed, mechs role etc and level of past BT/MW experiance and then a randomly assaigned mech from those that match your needs.
If everyone has to start light and earn bigger mechs it will also discourage the 'want biggest gun now' types and render any potential griefers relativly harmless over time.
Remember, the Niche "Starter" statement is: ""Your inheritance leaves you an Old Mech your daddy used in the first war....before he lost his Honor, and hide the Mech claiming to me a Moisture farmer in a distant planet with 2 suns....""
BLAH,
but a Base Locust as a starting mech, would weed out a few weekend warriors....

Valkyrie
VLK-QT2 - This variant was developed by the Taurian Concordat during the Jihad. It carries a Light PPC and a Streak SRM-6. An XL Engine increases the top speed to 111 km/h. Ten double heat sinks keep the Mech cool.
