A friend of mine was playing this a few days ago and the game looked super, like a revamped version of Titans of Steel. I figured Id give it a shot. My computer specs blew his out of the water so I thought Id be able to run it no problem

Guess not. Looking around on the forums I noticed this game is super buggy, especially as of the last update. I jumped in at the wrong time I suppose.

Anyway heres my computer specs

MB: Abit AB9 Pro LGA 775
CPU: Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 2.4ghz (3.0 OCed when I want)
GPU: Zotac Geforce GT 630 Synergy Edition 4gb 128 bit DDR3
Ram: 8gb OCZ Gold Edition DDR2 800mhz 2x4 5-5-5
PSU: Apevia ATX-AS680w

CPU is cooled with H80 push-pull cougars

Now the fun stuff. I downloaded the game and that went off without a hitch. Installed and started up perfectly. Then I tried to choose a mech...

As you can see on the right side when I tried to choose a trial mech the image would dissappear and the game would crash. No exceptions to the matter.

I would restart and move to the mech lab and be greeted with this:

I figured those grey spheres are anchors for the 3d models and I was just seeing that. Choosing anything again would cause the game to crash. No exceptions.

I figured it was my video card acting up so I made sure I was updated to the latest Nvidia drivers 314.22. Didnt work, so I downgraded the drivers since I heard bad things about those drivers. Still didnt work. Set the global and game specific settings in the Nvidia Control panel to all manners of settings. Still nothing worked. All the same.

Finally I went into Pilot lab

Again, mechs become greyed out when I try to choose anything. But the game wouldnt crash here.

I also cant click Launch, even when I get a mech to be selected.

I know this is a beta game and some cards arent supported right. The game never said my card was unsupported but I thought Id try on of my old backups :ATI Radeon x850 XT. This time the game actually said the card was unsupported and I was only greeted with a black screen and the cursor for the game. Oh well.

Ive reinstalled the game 4 times, altered the graphics to its lowest, set the AA off. Ive no clue whats wrong aside from my GPU being to bad for the game which makes no sense cause Windows Index gives me a 6.7 for graphics and gaming graphics both.

Any help on the matter would be appreciated.

It's probably this card. It's not a gaming card.

Edit:
Run a benchmark program, such as 3D Mark or 3D Mark 11 and see if it runs correctly on the 630.

If you switched from AMD to Nvidia, make sure all of your old drivers and software are uninstalled.
You may need to uninstall the new drivers, re install the new card. Reboot into safemode and uninstall the ATI drivers, than put the new card back in and reinstall the Nvidia drivers.

If you believe it's your card, run a few rounds of memtestcl

http://folding.stanf...h/DownloadUtils

you'll need to shift+right click on the installed directory open in command prompt. Type "memtestcl (your video card ram) (amount of tests)"
Example:
C:/Users/me/Memtest CL/memtestcl 2056 400

Windows reserves some video ram, so it will fail if you try to enter the full amount.

memtestcl will find errors with your card very quickly.

But that video card is seriously bad. Even the minimum required card, the 8800 GT, will out perform this card. Pick up a 660 or 560 and problem solved.

The 630 is a terrible card, but that should not stop it rendering mechs in this fashion, im pretty sure there is someone around here playing on a 630 already.
Interesting to note here, on the trial mech pannel, two of the mechs are not displaying in those screenshots the 4X and 8Q.

You have updated direct x and installed the .netframework version required for the game?

.net is definitely a good thing to check. Windows Update should fix this automatically.

Go into the settings and set everything low, especially AA, and see if that resolves the textures.

But I still say bench the card. If the benchmarks fail, the card is bad. If the benchmarks are fine, then the game is bad.

I shouldve clarified. I had the nvidia drivers first, then tried the ati driver. When I went back to the nvidia drivers it still failed. I have searched the forums and I remember someone rocking a 630 so I know its possible. The one thing I havent checked is the .netframework. But as you said windows update shouldve already given me that. Unless theres a manual download I need.

When I get home Ill benchmark the card. I know I have done Furmark GPU stress test and it worked fine overnight and it worked fine. I installed an aftermarket cooler cause of that but nonetheless it still worked

If ur computer blows ur freinds out of the water, i dread to think what kind of ancient machine he is running, aswell as being surprised it runs MWO.

Your GPU is not meant for gaming. The Nvidia X10 to X50 are all media cards. The Gaming cards start at th X50ti and go up to the X90, Well actualy it goes up to the GTX Titan atm, buts thats a special.

Your CPU is old, it was released at the begining of 2007, so its overdue for replacment on a gaming rig. It wasnt slow back then ..but it is now.

As for ur problem, a good bbench test will let u know if its a major issue or not. If ur drivers are up to date and ur OS has no issues (as in 'u have not reinstalled ur OS for 3 years and its probably got some bugs' kinda issues ) then its likely ether a settings problem within NCP, or MWo doesnt like the 630 GPU u have.

If u eventualy get the problem sorted , dont expect great frame rates in MWO, ur GPU will be holding u back, and any replacment modern 'gaming' GPU will then be held back by ur CPU.

I tell u this so ur not dissapointed when u get things running.
Good luck.

My entire rig is old. I made it back in 2007 lol. It has always run games for me really nicely, and in an even bigger surprise my laptop can run MWO. It has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250. I only get 4-10 fps but it runs non the less lol

Which is why the GT 630 should run it.

I have no clue if I have the .net 4.0 framework on my tower or not. Bad conduct sadi to reduce the AA settings. Was he referring to NCP or is the .net framework settings I can alter?

.netframework is unrelated to graphical options, it is however required to run the game.

Gotcha. Well considering I cant even get the game to start past the client that may be my problem

Seems I found a fix. I run MWO at 20-30fps in game and 40 in menu. It looked like I had an ATI parallel processing driver running next to my 630. I had a helluva time removing it too.

I also downgraded my nvidia driver to 314.21.

I ran memtest cl at 3g for 400 passes and never got an error, so at least my card is still good.

I then deleted MWO completely and reinstalled. The patcher looked different this time as well. Giving me an actual ETA and download bar. First time the patch finished it was corrupted. Told it to retry and its been working wonderfully since.

So the GT 630 is capable and although the speed isnt super fantastic its still perfectly capable of being played.

Well ..'playability' is different for everyone. I wouldnt consider 20-30 FPS in MWO playable tbh.

but even so ..glad ot hear u got things working.

@Mas7ter

Your rig is old and coming to the end of its useful life. The main issue is your graphics card. My current rig (which I am about to replace) has a slightly lower end CPU and a much better graphics card (Nvidia GTX460 1gb) which lets me game at around 30 - 40 fps on low detail 1440 x 900. Right now the graphics card in my rig is being held back by CPU and Ram timings. If you were to upgrade to a newer card alone, you would probably be in a similar position but with better frame rates.

If money is a concern, as it is for most of us, I would advise you to go with a good graphics card and then save up until you can get a good mobo + Ram + CPU combination. Right now is not such a good time to buy motherboards or CPU's as Intel is about to kill off Socket 1155 which means the upgrade path would be the same as you are looking at right now. AMD is weak for gaming at the moment (I am going with them right now simply because I can't afford better) which means that it would be better to wait until Intel's next platform comes on sale as current tech will be sold of cheap and you will be able to go for a more upgrade friendly path should you choose to.

If I overclock my card to the point just under crashing the video drivers I can pull about 25fps lol. Its bad for the card and I wanted to see what it could do at the utter most. Im perfectly fine however with 20fps.

I have put some thought into a new mobo/cpu/ram combo and as you said it would cost some money. I would go AMD though. Intel has been good to me thus far but it is just not in my price range anymore. I was looking on newegg and found a decent AM3+ six core/ 8x1 gig ddr3 g skill ram and a mobo. It was around 300 I think which is perfectly in my range and it would let me up grade later if I wished.

If you go AMD make sure it's the newer vishera core and not bulldozer.

Also do not get a single 8GB RAM stick, either go 2x4GB or 2x8GB(overkill for gaming)
