Sniping is a difficult, but rewarding endeavour when you land the shot on the enemy from far away. A mech with the proper sniper build (e.g. Awesomes with three PPCs, which I run for example) can soften up targets before they can notice it, while the friendlies move in for the kill. Add that with Advanced zoom, and the threat range of a Sniper mech is doubled, making it potent in spotting for friendlies, and sniping at long-distant targets before they move in.

Which brings me to ask - how many people use Advance zoom, despite its somewhat blurry function and recent problems? I've noticed recently that while the blurry image hasn't been resolved yet, the targeting functions go haywire when I use the Adv. zoom function...but that's besides the point.

Also - if you're a sniper mech, name your notable achievements with your sniping kills.

I believe the blurry image is due to technical limitations of the Cry Engine that makes it hard to render a second view port. Same reason basically why there won't be a rear view camera any time soon.

No opinion on sniping as I don't do it, sorry. So I do not have the module either.

It was the first module I bought, the one that I was most excited about.

I never use it. It's almost worthless on most missions.

I own the module, but it's useless.
Not only is it 8-bit, but thermal and normal zoom is about as effective.

I have bought the module, but no longer use it.

I've found having a clearer screen, while farther away allows me to hit more consistently, though I do miss the lower mouse sensitivity of the module, so I may put it back on my sniper config(s).

I think my favorite/most impressive accomplishment is destroying a Commando running full steam, parallel to me prior to the netcode fixes at 700m away with a ERPPC/Gauss combo.

Being all excited about it I also bought the module... Which now lays somewhere in my mech bay gathering dust under a spare oil can and pile of used actuator gaskets.

Therman or normal vision modes combined with the default zoom system are perfectly adequate for all your sniping needs. 8-bit circa 1984 advanced zoom does not. The 6M CB I spent on that module is pretty much the only expenditure that I severely regret making in MWO.

As an aside it's also bizzare that the Crye engine can't do render-to-texture when the Unreal engine has been doing exactly that since the middle of 1998...

I know it's stupid but I have a Raven 3L which has an ERPPC. I just sit in my little nest with ECM cloaking me while I shoot people. I've been testing whether AZ or just regular 3x zoom is better. And in the end the difference is negligable considering the amount of gxp and cbills spent.

It was my first module too. Which makes me sad.

No it's horrible... In closed beta they just had your entire screen zoom in... people wanted it like MW4.

I for one would be happy with screen zoom or fixing the damn thing. It's almost worthless like NARC.

But seriously it's really bad...So add it to the fix list please PGI.

Pretty much this.

I am sure my input is pointless, but this is also my first and only module I have ever bought. And I am now gun-shy about buying or even caring about any other modules because the horrible experience with AdvZ.

I was so excited to get it and try it out, and what a let down. Feel emotionally ripped off after buying it.

Heard about Adv Zoom, saw pictures of it in use, and avoided it like heeeeeell.

Best sniping kill? Stalker 2x PPC 2x ERPPC, alpha'd at a heat blur across forest colony near round start.
Headshot kill on an undamaged D-DC atlas.

If they changed it so that it only zoomed in to 2x in the window... but allowed you to use it while zoomed in (up to 3x) in full screen, would it be better?

My opinion is yes.

It would cut the "8bit effect" significantly (instead of sixteen pixels representing one pixel, only four representing one), and would allow for a max zoom of 6x, rather than 4x.

I wasted 5,000 gxp on the Pilot Tree skill for it, and have been saving up to purchase a module, but after spectating many games and seeing it in action, I think I'm going to stick with the standard zoom. Or who knows, we'll see when I get the rest of the 6 mil in the next day or two.

As for sniping, I'm loving it with my CTF-3D with Jump Jets and 4x PPCs. Thermal Vision is great for this. Doesn't have the range of ER PPCs, and it runs hot, but nailing an Awesome or tearing off a Cat's ear from 800m with a 4 PPC Alpha feels pretty damn rewarding. I just have to have backup when those Ravens and Jenners get behind me.

It's a horrible module that almost completely useless. I would be a lot more mad if I bought it before i bought other modules that actually do something.

The Advanced Zoom lets me see less than with 3X zoom, on top of that right now it's a bit buggy

Oh, if you bought this as your first module, you made a mistake. That mistake was called sniping far too often, and not actually fighting enough.

How many matches have you lost while firing at people from 800m away in your awesome snipar position, while your teammates were engaged in a brawl?

Just like the LRM boats, you need to learn to move closer to make yourself more effective.
