Sniping is not too hard in 4-man slop play. In 8-mans it's mostly extinct because most 8-mans are geared towards heavy brawlers and fast scouts that simply advance behind cover as a unit and try to force a short range slugfest. Snipers just don't pack enough firepower for a short range game and stand-offs are sort of rare. When Alpine and Desert maps come out, this may all change.

Long range support is all about positioning. Sniping really isn't technically correct for the role that these mechs usually fill...

Basically long range support should provide enfilade fire from way on the side, while the brawlers hold the line. However, the trick with this is positioning, both for the direct fire mech, and the line dogs. The line dogs have to hold a line that forces the enemy into view of the long range support... and the long range support has to be in a position that allows enfilade fire without exposing them to LRM counterfire.

That said... a long range direct support mech that gets caught at short range by the enemy's line dogs is dead. So fast and accurate scouting is going to be a must to allow them to get into position without dying.

The problem also is that the artificial viewing distance is far too blurry, and not sharp and crisp. Parts of a Mech, buildings, or terrain at a distance blend together and look all fuzzy (becomes more apparent at 800m and beyond). It basically looks exactly like my terrible vision in reality when I'm not wearing near-sighted corrective lenses...

I assume it has to do with optimization for LODs, but certain graphical "features" like film-grain are highly annoying in games. I certainly wouldn't pass a vision test for piloting in real-life where your vision needs to be sharp and focused. Granted in the magical BT Universe, I imagine the type of tech being extremely, amazing HD monitors in those cockpits. That's the feel I'd rather have in-game like when sitting up close to my high-def monitors.

First module I purchased and I regret wasting both the cash and the experience to get this blurry useless item. I snipe almost every fight and do not even have this module on the mech I use the most.

having the module is a little tiny bit better than not having it.
but it's not even worth it to take it out and put it into another mech before the match, not having it is pretty much as good as having it

it was also the first module i bought - i kinda regret wasting the GXP but only because i'm waiting for future modules (not interested in the ones available)

the best use i found for it, is ironically at mid range (not long) helps you shoot the atlas in the cockpit at 600-700 mts and at that range the pixelation is not THAT horrible


as for the blur, yeah it's the game bla bla blah, but i'm also pretty sure it has SOMETHING to do with the film grain effect

I find the advanced zoom to be of negligible effect at best. The regular zoom does the job better for me.

Then again I don't like sniping farther than 500m back as the damage drop really hurts your DPS, which really matters in the opening moves of an 8 man vs 8 man game. (I snipe with dual gauss despite their tendency to go boom)

The real threat to a sniper mech would have to be a fast striker like a splat Cat (6x SRM 6). Actually that's a threat to all mechs.

How many matches have you lost while firing at people from 800m away in your awesome snipar position, while your teammates were engaged in a brawl?

Just like the LRM boats, you need to learn to move closer to make yourself more effective.
