So what is an Upgrade Package?
Well it's the expendable thing that upgrades a Mech to double heatsinks, or Endo Steel internals or Ferro-Fibrous armor or an XL engine.
It's not really real in Battletech as most of those things require you to throw away the Mech and build a new one from scratch. Except the Ferro-Fibrous of course.
But that has never stopped people from simply doing so and for the most part it is now part of the game.
There is a lot to be said for ensuring that most people continue to ride stock or only slightly modified Mechs.
And there is a lot to be said for allowing people access to the fun toys.
What say you?

I think there is already a simple solution to this. You can upgrade your mech for c-bills. I'm guessing you'll be able to buy in game currency for real money, or have to use the premium account to gain c-bills faster, how ever they provide a balancing factor. Money is finite, so you have to consider what you can afford to upgrade.
It's perfectly normal to upgrade Battlemechs from standard to endo steel for example, you don't have to throw the mech away and start again, not sure were you read that. But it's not really accurate. Like in the Battletech universe much is possible if you have the money. Upgrading from standard to endo steel requires a lot of expense and the right facilities, something which are rare and thus cost a lot.
However, I'm not keen on the idea of just trying to monetize everything in the game with real money purchase. I don't know what the restrictions will be on upgrades to chassis and such, but it seems totally feasible to me to allow you to upgrade whatever you can afford. If that is buying a pack, then ok, but it seems like a over complication then just allowing you to buy or upgrade whatever you can afford at the time. Just my thoughts on it anyway.

Funny thing, money is pretty much never a limiter in games.
Like the Titans in EVE. The Devs there thought that there would only ever be a dozen of them. Now there are hundreds of them.

The big difference compared to EVE Online is, in EVE you can transfer in game currency between accounts. So in effect you can bank roll these things with real money or like wise by shifting ISK regardless of we're it came from. Bryan has said specifically that you cannot transfer in game currency between accounts. So big units who might make loads of money, let's say can shift the wealth around to make sure each pilot has the MWO equivalent of the EVE Online Titan / Super cap syndrome.

Valid point. Without a real economy there isn't a way to consolidate wealth.
It makes C-bills a static quantity like XP and not much different then a "Battles Won" counter. Gives the player the choice between upgrading or buying another Mech.
