One thing I like to do is paint my Mech's based on miniatures and 'Canon' unit/house/merc colors. While it is possible to use the basic paint schemes to somewhat resemble specific units, its not entirely robust as of yet.

I'll start with an example:

I spent a lot of hours just fiddling with color's to see how close to 'canon' I could make this.

This is the closest I could get to 5th Davion Guards colors with the Feb 5th patch, which added more colors. Its darn close, but without being able to exactly put paint where I want to, I can't make it accurately. Perhaps it is already in the works, if not, I imagine an improvement to this system where one can better place paint on specific area's of a Mech to make something exactly like a Miniature. Or just to better emulate a unit or house paint scheme in general by having far more control of color placement.

Some other examples:

This one was easy being one solid color and just requires the implementation of unit emblems (Lone Wolves have no specific paint scheme)

Again, another Lone Wolves example. It turned out "OK," in my opinion, but the closest I could do to resemble this was by using the Woodland pattern and matching the colors.

Other types of colors that are easy are Marik Militia, which are usually a solid purple.

Other Examples of paintschemes that are not currently possible, but would be awesome if made so!:

(being able to place primary and secondary color's in opposite locations, vertically and horizontally)

(Marik Militia mostly with purple, but two opposite colors on each side with red and blue)

(a primary on the main body, with a secondary color on arms, legs, and CT only)

Metallics like Gold, Silver, and Bronze

Here's what I'd like to see added that covers most of your OP:

Two-Tone Camo Patterns (2 colors):
1. Upper Body & Lower Body
2. Left Side & Right Side
3. Front & Back
4: Center & Outer - wide vertical stripe from head, CT, inside legs as Center, the rest as Outer
(Maybe with selected parts / trim / borders for color 3)

Quadrant Camo Patterns (4 colors):
1. Upper Right Side, Upper Left Side, Lower Body Right Side, Lower Body Left Side - listed as "diagonal" above

By Body Part (4 colors):
1. Arms, Legs, Torso, Head
2. Arms, Legs, Side Torsos, CT+Head

Should be a lot more options as they release us new patterns. We have what 3 or 4 now? I'm sure they'll get it up into the dozens before too long.

Currently, patterns are applied to the entire mech, and every pattern is drawn for every individual variant, so it's doubtful that they would allow a mix-and-match system for patterns.

I could see individual panels (as displayed in the Mech Lab) eventually being painted solid colors, but I'd say that is a long way off.

They should add a process that allows us to paint our 'Mechs like MS Paint.
