Except jumpjet trajectories are 100% predictable since you cant change direction in midair. Additionally the moment you land your forward momentum is disrupted by hitting the ground which makes you an easy target until you can accelerate again. Jumpjets make you easier to kill most of the time.

you're doing it wrong

try not burning all your jumpjet continuously right off the bat
you can also turn in midair, even if you can't move sideways midair, you can change which way you go when you land

those two maneuvers mean they have a harder time predicting when and where you land, and which way to track once you do

alternatively use jumpjets to keep you hovering from high ground, and land behind an obstacle, that way you're basically like a bomber

Sure, sometimes. But other times it's more effective to attack an enemy formation from an unexpected direction and get as much attention as possible before getting to safety, so that they're distracted when all your team's bigger mechs come out to fight.

Unfortunately the game gives you 0 points for accomplishing this.

EDIT: This is just like why I sometimes take AMS: often to provide cover for allies, not for myself. I don't get points for this, but it does improve our win probability (back when LRMs were quite popular).

The game gives you 0 points for a lot of essential activities. Blame the idiotic "brawl squad" for degenerating this game into a tactics-less furball. The devs need to reinstate C-Bill and XP rewards for basecapping, and many other activities that don't involve playing "Heavy/Assault punch-for-punch". Flame away, brawlers, if you can tear your simian eyes away from the UFC for long enough.

Uh you really shouldnt be comparing a spider to a bomber and telling people theyre doing it wrong. You shouldnt even be playing a spider at all because theyre crap. Spiders arnt going to "bomb" anyone LMAO. Maybe if spiders could lay exploding eggs... but then theyd be like chickens? I dont know...

And yes jumpjets do make you an easy target. I kill spiders and jenners in midair all the time with my commando. Jumping makes them super easy to lock-on to with streaks. Or if im in another mech I just wait for them to land then alpha strike them the moment they touch down since they lose all their forward momentum.

Jumpjets need directional thrusting, way more fuel capacity, and they need to not make you lose momentum when you touchdown. Then maybe they wouldnt be as useless. Spiders should be able to jump behind enemy mechs, shoot them in the back, then jump away again before the enemy mech can even turn around. Thats how the spider plays in Battletech and its how it should play in MWO.

It'd be great if PGI introduced more monetary rewards for things, us so called "simian brawl squads" want rewards for **** like scouting and flanking and following commander orders too, don't blame us for PGI's short sighted game design.

i wasn't talking about spiders, i was talking about jumpjets (note the lack of mention of spiders in my post)
i'm well aware that the spiders' energy hardpoints prevent it from really shooting down when midair
catapults on the other hand can use that tactic quite effectively

and again, if you're burning all your jumpjet immediately and constantly, you ARE doing it wrong

As long as the flea doesn't damage it's own legs by running quickly over terrain, it'll be one up on the spider in my book.

Obviously. Pulsing your jumpjets and leaving enough fuel to land so you dont damage your legs has been around since MW2. Its nothing new. But in MW2 and MW3 you could actually fly a good distance with jumpjets. In MWO the distance you fly is pathetic.

Per the book, the Flea comes with a Std 120 engine. Which is 3 tons. What is the formula for the max engine? Anyways, take that weight and add 5t for MLs. I think switching to DHS+ES and maybe FF will do the trick.

That's how I got my 4G. Max armor, 11 DHS, ES, FF, 145, 3mls, 1ac20, 3 tons ammo. That is a good formula for the YLW too. So it might work for the Flea as well....

not just pulsing though, burning enough to give you a second upward thrust will really throw off people's aim

and yeah, you're right, you can't jump nearly as far as you could in older mw games (hell, the low grav space maps in mw2 were ridiculous), but those got a bit ridiculous when you were jumping halfway across the map at once

Yeah, and JJ's could be used to dodge missiles. Yet another good use for them that does not exist in MWO. MW:LL are probably the best ones yet and they removed leg fall damage from using them.

I dislike the part where i can only equip up to 3 lasers, not giving me enough punch with just 3 med lasers i find myself puting in a large. I would much rather put in 4 med lasers than 1 large laser but 3 med lasers just seems too few.

I think you got that the wrong way round.
3xML = 15 damage 3.75 dps
1XLL = 9 damage 2.12 dps

Even two has more punch. Not to mention the two extra tonnes of HS/JJ/armor 3xML gives you.

I think the Spider will be a bit better once we get access to clan weapons. A V with a cERPPC (15 damage, 6 tonnes) or two cERLL (20 damage, 8 tonnes) will make for an interesting long range poptart/rooftop harasser.

The Spider-5D is not as bad as some people think. The 5V is fun but far less capable and the 5K is exactly as bad as everyone says it is.
