So I was going through some old piles of stuff and found a copy of Java for Dummies I bought a while back and never really did anything with when I got the bright idea that I might as well start learning Java - if nothing else, it's something extra to toss on my resume and LinkedIn profile, right?

Shortly thereafter I had what I thought might be a bright idea, but wanted to bounce it off the general head of the community (and possibly the devs?) before I got neck-deep in it; an external MechLab tool. For those that played EVE Online, think EFT or Pyfa for MWO. For those that played BattleTech, think HeavyMetal or Solaris SkunkWerks. For those that haven't played EVE or CBT... basically what I'm thinking is an external application that would let you play around with the various chassis and equipment, and allow you to save and share these loadouts with friends or your unit.

That would, at least, be my goal. This would not be something that would happen overnight, as I'd literally be learning as I go on this. But first I'd like to get a sense of how much interest there is in something like this.

Note to the devs/mods: I've never done anything like this, so I'm not sure if there's any legal issues involved, but to be clear, this project, if/when it actually gets off the ground, will be freely available to the MWO community for use. When I held up EVE Fitting Tool and Pyfa earlier, those really are prime examples of my intention and goal here. It is not my intention to make any money off of this whatsoever - my current plan waaaaay the hell down the line is to post the project on SourceForge and maintain a thread on here, thus avoiding any need to offset hosting costs. Please feel free to contact me if there's issues I haven't forseen, but I just wanted to make my intentions clear on this.

I would definatly help testing it!
I would even like to help coding it, but i only know some basics of PHP and Java and i just started a new vocational training. So i don't have time to read into that stuff.

There is a browser based PHP version of it arround i think, but i would really love a downloadable tool, like EFT for Eve Online

I can do HTML, XML(to a degree), C#, and Python.

Browser based is a neat idea. Maybe the devs will put this on their page if it gets good enough...
Java based? OK. You can imbed Python and C# code bits into a java applet. Vice versa is also true.

We could also do a version for weaker PCs too since the specs needed are very high.
written in C#, java, Python, or another "inter-combineable" language would work...
most laptops cant play MWO. (Dont ask me how I know.) :D

a version for mac and iOS might be neat. But we'll need an Objective C coder with an apple dev suite.(you also need a mac) <_<
i think you can embed java into mac and iOS apps.

a Version for android would also be neat...

Questions? Leave me a message on my profile. :)

I was actually looking for an android app just like you described (For my tablet). I like the idea.

I'm not good enough to do fresh code but i am good at editing and checking for errors so thoguh I did not vote that I would help code I would definitely help trouble shoot and update.

Already shot this idea at Garth a while ago, he never replied about it though. Have been drawing up plans for what I would use for an external app, the problem is that with school going on, and me joining the Corps soon, I really don't have time for programming such an app, though I could post what it would look like if I could do such a thing.
