Ahem indeed. Sober up next time you want to discuss the sad state of pirate raids in the periphery. A bit of Lyran steel will sort them out right quick.

How'd you mean, Pando? I'm pretty new to the BattleTech lore, but if there is an in universe reason for the black-out that'd be awesome.

ALL generators are down? Git outa here....

What we know: We haven't heard any news from the periphery in ages, and several worlds in the FRR, Combine, and FedCom are dropping off the HPG grid. We're not receiving any news from them.

We know that HPG grid or not, jumpships carry news as well, and we should have received SOME word.

We know that when ComStar disagrees with what is going on the in the Inner Sphere, they silence the HPG grids (4th Secession War and FEDCOM interference.) We know this did not stop news from getting out, just slowed it down.

IF the HPG grids are down, then ComStar is the one to talk to. Either that, or they are being knocked out/rendered inoperative by forces who are against the current planetary administration or House. THIS IS NEWS, and even this is not being broadcast. If ComStar isn't concerned with the blackout, then you know it's ComStar who is behind it.

The Federated Commonwealth, Draconis Combine, and the Space Vikings should demand an explanation from ComStar, or confescate their holdings and take them over. What that means is either, ComStar needs to give up the goods or we take EARTH away from them. It's that simple. They hold interstellar communication hostage, so we hold their HQ hostage.

The Devil Dogs would be happy to run point on this operation.

____________________________________

For you non-roleplayers out there, here's what we don't know: Several worlds are being attacked by the Clan in the territory of 3 houses and Comstar is administering the governments post-invasion on those worlds for their own ulterior motives, betraying the Inner Sphere for the sake of profit and in the name of prophets.

You're asking the wrong person. There are plenty of good intellectual informative persons available on forums regarding lore. I am not one of those persons. I believe a clanner posted something in regards to this showing it was clan ghost bear's involvement with a link to sarna.net.

Thanks for your honesty, Pando.

And thanks for that very awesome blurb, Peiper. I've a decent level of interest on roleplaying the invasion through MWO, but this being my first proper introduction to the BT Universe is somewhat crippling sometimes. What you've posted is definitely appreciated.

One quick MechWikia search later mentions that ComStar did perform a sphere-wide comms blackout during the clan invasion, however this occurred 1 May, 3052.

"The battle [of Tukayyid] started on May 1, 3052 ... At the same time, Primus Waterly initiated Operation Scorpion, which depended upon a complete, Sphere-wide communications blackout to force all the Inner Sphere leaders to bow to ComStar."

I've not been able to find out any more.

Basically at this point in time ComStar is half phone company, half religious zealot organization bent on throwing mankind back to the stone age so that it may be rebuilt in ComStar's image. You can imagine the sort of problems this causes. Following the battle of Tukayyid and Precentor Martial's murder/execution (depending on how you look at it) of Primus Myndo Waterly the organization moves away from its religious zealot past, which causes a schism where those who truly believed in the religious part of the organization split away from ComStar and form the Word of Blake, but that is beside the point at this time.

What is important currently is that ComStar controls interstellar communications. The Hyperspace Pulse Generators (HPGs) which allow communication across interstellar distances are all fully owned and operated by ComStar who for centuries have worked to keep tech-knowhow low all over the Inner Sphere except themselves, even going so far as to have scientists and researchers assassinated when they discover/rediscover advanced tech. This means noone other than ComStar themselves really know how to run and maintain the HPG stations, which gives them immense power (see the 4th succession war communications blackout of the Federated Commonwealth by ComStar because they saw the union of the Federated Suns and Lyran Commonwealth as a threat to their own plans).

As has been mentioned ComStar was aiding the clans in the early stages of the invasion because Primus Waterly thought they could control and manipulate the clans like they have controlled and manipulated the Successor Houses for centuries. At this point they were not aware, of course, that the clans' ultimate goal was to take Earth, which is fully under ComStar control and where they are headquartered. They administered the worlds for the clans following the conquest and in many cases set up some rather horrible reeducation camps to indoctrinate the people to the ComStar point of view- Planets where ComStar was running the show for the clans would, of course, see little or no com-traffic in or out to keep this hidden, and that is what the RPing here is hinting at. There is no information from the periphery since several planets fell off the grid (because they were attacked by the clans) and people are pointing at the phone company (ICly) and starting to wonder if they've got an agenda of their own like in the 4th Succession War.
