Looking for input from those that matter most (you the player). How would you feel if you were required to hold the fire button for the duration of the laser shot? Releasing the button early stops the shot early (so you don't do full damage) so that this way, if a team mate cross your path you can avoid raking their backside.

I know people should avoid crossing firing lanes.

Also, the heat is applied over the duration of the shot (or at least it should be) and so by canceling the shot, you cancel the heat generated.

This is interesting. Controlling heat is always a good thing.

It'd certainly be interesting, and for light mechs it'd be a huge benefit.

As long as the recharge time is the same this could be a good idea.

Well the recharge can go one of two ways.

The duration is 2sec right now I think and the cycle starts when the laser fire ends so.....

The cycle time can begin 2 sec after the weapon first fires, or the cycle time can start when the laser stops firing.

If you go the first route, the dps value is reduced on the weapon but if you go with the second, the damage you do that burst is reduced but your dps remains unchanged.

Wouldn't like it.

I usually bind the big punch to my Q key. Only having to push it once to make the thing go is nice.

bah! if a teammate is too lazy to have situational awareness and cross infront of me while i am engaged, they deserve a full alpha blast in the back.

but your idea sounds interesting

If they could make tag a toggle then yeah, this idea isnt too shabby, but right now i having to hold down tag as well as a laser would be annoying, especially as my mouse does not register more than 3 buttons at the same time

I agree that TAG should be a toggle

It would have to still have a cooldown when you stopped firing, to avoid abuse of the feature. I am pretty sure it would cause problems with a great many things. Although i am not against a group of lasers that fire like that and if held down gives a constant beam.

This idea has my seal of approval. When I first started playing, I thought that this was how the lasers worked and lag was causing my lasers to keep shooting after I let go of the fire button.

You don't have to hold down tag.

This would not work well with chainfire like i use it in many builds.

For example when i run my stalker with 4 large lasers i usually put them in chainfire
This way each time i tap my fire button i release one laser shot. If i want to alpha i simply need to click 4 times in a row fast.

This feels very good for me and is great for managing heat while not having to use a second button to alpha.
And by offsetting my lasers i can hit lights more easily.

This would not work with the suggested method, therefore i'd rather prefer to raise my shot to the sky when a teammate is crossing.

Edit:
Another thing to consider are visuals.
I like those large long-lasting beams hushing over the landscape.
When everyone is cancelling their shots regularly this could probably look quite odd...

Edit2:
What could work however is if this is implemented as a switch just like chainfire so i can decide if i want to use the feature, or not. But then there still is the issue with probably bad-looking fights.

If a teammate does this, don't just let him eat it, twitch your mouse up/down and keep from doing more dmg. Dont be "that guy" who just fires through team mates like CoD4 TD so you might get a kill.

That aside, it's an intresting idea, but really breaks the cannon of MW energy weapons.

only for pulse lasers which would give them character over the normal lasers we have now.

Oh I do, but I'd rather give them no damage at all. Plus the effectiveness of doing this depends on how close they are to you. It also other other applications.
