I waited for it, I watched it online, I tried downloading it... and I ended up getting the 720p version, instead, letting all the additional wait for source-level material to keep for personal use go to waste...



Anyho...

What are your thoughts on the premiere, guys? (and don't forget to hide the less general stuff with spoiler tags, not everyone watched it the moment it aired... )

Personally, I loved it. Maybe it had a little issues here and there, but it made up for it with the rest. The only real nitpick of the episode is the excessive amount of clopping material it's inevitably going to be the source of...

I'm fully awake again and I managed to watch the new episodes.
I'll give it a six out of ten rating.

Discord
+ Discords words were funny and the entry was hilarious.
- Discord was way to passive and obidient for a being of chaos. His only actions were helpfull words.

Flashbacks
+ We learned more about equestrias past and how Nightmare Moon came into being.
- It seems like Celestia isn't there, when Luna gives here "one princess"-speech. As Twilight seems to be only an observer in those flashbacks, who is Luna/Nightmare Moon talking to?

Elements of Harmony
+ We got rid of the elements of harmony. They always bugged me as a deus ex machina.
- Did Applejack really say, it's the elements that binds them together? Did she learn nothing about their friendship in the past 65 episodes?
- What were the others thinking when they send Twilight back to Ponyville? The elements only seem work when they are all brought together, so why split them up? Even if it was to protect Twi as a princess, it was stupid.

Funny Moments
+ Pinkie Pie lost in Dreams about frosting
+ Pinkie Pies letters to Twilight
+ Discord singing - Well... sort of!
+ Twilights flying attempts. To be more precise... her landings!
+ Air battle with Everfree Forest clouds

What got me scratching my head
- What actually was Twilights role at the summer sun celebration? Was it really only to add a special effect to the show?
- Why did Twilight use black magic on the potion? How did she know she had to use it?
+/- One deus ex machina gone, another in the making? We will have to wait and see.

Discord acting passively is anything but bad. This is a masterful tactician like Q/Discord at work. He knows exactly everything about what's gonna happen, who's gonna do what and abuses it to the maximum in helping them achieve their goal (and his own behind the curtain). Acting exactly like a reformed, but still Discord, should act.

As far as elements of harmony go, they can't be Deus Ex Machina, since they are woven into the story and are a part of it. For a counterpoint, a true DEM is observable with the Zecora's potion, since it wasn't seen before or since, it just appears to give them the means to find out what to do and promptly disappears again. It's nice they've been removed, though... going to make the Discord and fighting evil part of the story all that more interesting.

She is a student of Celestia, she learned the same sort of spell from Celestia and one assumes she didn't just leave it as is (oh well, Celestia "taught" me some super powerful spell that is completely evil... who cares), but instead studied a bit more about it in books or from Celestia herself. Yeah, this is a bit of apologestic way of putting things, but it's a relatively minor error on their part (as in, just make Twilight know a thing or two about the potion: "But this is 'Potion X' I've read about in StarSwirl's [not needed, but adds drama] book and can only be finished by dark magic! [Zecora responds and the story continues exactly the same as it does in the final release]" and it's fixed... I'm definitely not a writer, this script is pretty bad, but you get the idea).

Oh, and the box would only be a DEM if it worked like the artifacts from SC2:WoL story. Unless they are conveniently going to be the perfect solution to a single problem that will appear in the last episode, they are a part of the plot, not above it.

And there was one thing that came from this episode aside from an unhealthy amount of questionable material...







...When will they learn giving characters faces like these (say, as in 'Wrong neighbourhood') never ends well?

I was confused by the black magic thing. Zecora called it "alicorn" magic? I hope black magic in general is better explained later.

The black magic is a bit confusing. Really depends on Equestria's working definition of "black magic." It could be that type of magic has a cost of some kind, instead of inherently evil. In this case the cost of incomplete information. I doubt if Twilight had drunk the potion all at once she would have seen the whole picture in the beginning.
