You need to have the basic tier pilot skills unlocked for 3 variants of the mech you are trying to get elite pilot skills in.

You have to buy 2 more Hunchback variants and unlock Basic for them.

Logically that is kinda silly. Just pointing that out. -- But yeah I will do that I guess.

I understand gating but still, that concept is somewhat flawed in how that is worded.

Just to expand on what's been said -

Get basic efficiencies for 3 variants of the same mech to unlock elite efficiencies.

Get elite efficiencies for 3 mechs in the same class to unlock master. This means that if you have 2 other medium mechs already elited, you can proceed to do master after you elite the hunchback.

However, since this is your first mech, I suggest eliting all three variants of the hunchbacks so that the next heavy mech will be easier.

The description in the pilot lab says it all :(

I suggest to go with a 4H and 4P after the 4SP and do all the elites on them all. By this you can then buy 3 cents, basic them all, then sell 1 or 2 of them and the one you keep will be able to reach elite and master.

You're playing a Sci-fi game based around future technology involving warfare, and you want to throw in logic? Just point that out.

Lol good point, I should have said for the fact to push some diversity I wish you could apply this to other mech models *****.

As for the logic, I meant it in that way. (Not forcing us to buy 3 of the same model roughly)... lol.

That is funny though...

Wait what? Pretty sure I got to master on Centurion without any other mechs leveled...

In other words, if for example, you previously mastered a hunchback variant, this means you already have 3 hunchback variants with full elite.

So to master a Centurion D, you first need to get the basic efficiencies for the Centurion D and two other Centurion variants. Then you can just focus on getting elite for the Centurion D and upon completion of elite efficiencies proceed immediately to getting master for the Centurion D.

It is not necessary to get elite for the other 2 Cent variants.

Hope this clarifies the earlier post.

Not sure how you missed this bit:
or the "BASIC VARIANTS UNLOCKED: 1/3" in the big white text.

Why?
Tis quite easy to buy & rank up mechs.
It usually lets you try out new builds in most cases.
I.E: Catapult = Sniper (K2)/ LRM (C1/C4)/ SRM boat (A1).
Atlas = Brawler (D-DC/D)/ Sniper (RS)

Other times, not so much.
Stalker = SRM boat or PPCs for all variants.
Raven = 3L or dead.
etc

Actually, the Stalker makes a good LRM boat as well - it even has enough room left over for reasonable secondary armament for close range combat. My drop buddy uses one to good effect.
