I think some toggleable floodlights would be awesome as a means to counter dark donditions, and perhaps even fog and blizzards.

Your thoughts dear forum users?

Because they are so good at it in real life? (That's sarcasm by the way in case you've never been taught how to use headlights on your car in those conditions.)

If you want to use flares and starshells as were used in WWII, then I'd be all for it just for flavor. What most drivers in the world don't seem to get is that headlights on your car, even the fancy halogen ones, have less to do with lighting the road for you and a lot more to do with making you visible at large distances. Take a look at flashlights out there today. Read up a bit on the tech. There's a reason that modern military applications focus on enhancing ambient light and not producing more illumination.

There are all sorts of cool things you could do with lighting mechs and other "camo" options but because of the very nature of light and light sources you are not going to effectively light an area on the battlefield with anything like this.

Now, you want to get into the physics, I'd be happy to see them make lasers and possibly other weapons knock out Night Vision because flash suppression or overload causes the night vision optics to shutdown for safety. Of course, night vision would have to be superior to thermal vision and actually get used once in a while for that to matter. (Based on the fact that I never observe anyone using it and I *do* see thermal sometimes.)

My christmas lights, christmas tree and lanterns in my cockpit register heat signatures, so I feel that by default in the game, a light does create a heat signature in the core programming.

I vote yes to foglights. Another nick nack that's been around in the game for a long time.

Have differnt sizes as well, like a smaller search light or flood light all the way up to a huge Hollywood style flood light with the bat signal on it...

I'm only half joking...

No. Left &/or Right torso only.

Thank you for clarifying that. Perhaps it could be based on wether you can score a critical? Could make machine guns a flood light killer.

I think a floodlight would be awesome, if nothing else for the sake of adding to the overall feel of the game. Perhaps it could be a 1 ton energy weapon, one ideal for sticking in the head slots of hunchies/awesomes, etc. Just an idea. That being said it shouldnt produce a lot of heat if any, maybe 1 or 2% to base level, like when you dont have enough heatsinks to move at full throttle while remaining at 0%. Having read other posts, flares would be awesome. Maybe set up like a NARC cannon, another thing that could be added down the road if the devs run out of cool extras.

I want flood lights, and better night vision, and better heat vision (i.e. buildings and dirt and snow probably shouldn't all display the same temperature.)

Hmm...

While flood/head lights sound interesting as an alternative to the vision modes, I think the actual implementation would be a bit clumsy if not self defeating...

floodlighting is fairly linear and aside from possibly some mild ambient lighting it would do little to give you situational awareness outside your cone of light. (Think of looking out your side windows at night on a dark road... not much to see there is there? :( Not to mention their lighting would really only be useful when your in-close brawling -aka- face-humping...

As a previous poster mentioned I think flares, phosphorous drop chutes etc might be cooler / more practical alternatives to the vision modes and or floodlights...

I've wanted flares added for a while. Partially to act like modern star-shot (lights up the area), and partially to act as a sort of distress signal (since we still can't communicate effectively with half the team).

You walk over a hill to scout left only to find most of the enemy team waiting, while your own team is unaware that the enemy is so close. Solution? Launch a red flare straight up to notify the team of the danger. Sorta acts as a more realistic "ping" function found in other games-which-shall-not-be-named.

Expanding on the parachute flare idea...

We already have "distant war action" happening (the battle that plays our around us in the distance on River)... Would be really cool if randomly a parachute flare or two were fired over the city. The diffused and moving / swinging lighting would be very "Apocalypse Now" and would definitely be very "war like"... :P

If floodlights or flares were ever implemented, people will just get discovered and sniped that much faster on night maps by people with much better awareness of their surroundings.

I can drive well enough on river city night without using thermal or night vision simply from ambient light, gut feel, and memory, or by using the ravine. Though when the fight starts I switch to thermal because it's easier to tell where the targets are.

It's just a shame that there have to be crutches in-game for the biggest asset to any team - communication - simply because too many people don't actually use it or listen to it.

In fairness... I believe any soldier be they on foot or in a cockpit, has a rational desire to "see the enemy". What your interpret as a crutch for others is simply an enhancement mechanism to their present situational awareness situation. :P

flood lights are a good idea. I was surprised when they didnt have them on the night maps in MWO cuz I remember MW4 and Mercenaries had flood lights on mechs.

They are in TT on certain Mechs, But, they are very fragile. Any hit to the location carrying the Flood Light destroys the Flood Light.

Also, the Flood Light illuminates the Mech carrying the Flood Light as well.

i fully support the idea of adding it especially as a weapon against enemy mech as a floodlight would definitely mess up special optics like heat and night vision of course it would definitely be easy to take out
