I think your one, medium laser will end up doing more damage than your 4 machine guns combined...

Technically 4 MGs have the same DPS as 1 Medium Pulse Laser, and weighs more, but has no heat. I guess since its constant firing, they probably are more like a Medium Laser though.

Caustic + 10 SINGLE heatsinks + INSIDE the Caldera meant that single med laser couldn't be fired much.

I wouldn't say machine guns are useless, just less use until you get through their armor to their juicy amunition stores inside (are open missile doors vulnerable to that? and if not, what use are they then?)
I do not have much experiance with MGs (being more a Commando pilot-no balistics ) but I have had frequent similar events with flamers.
