Simple idea. Battletech novels and sourcebooks are full of stories of botched drops, where mechs from one unit got scattered all over a battlefield due to Aerospace fighters hammering their dropship.

Basically, players from both teams would find themselves in random positions around the map, and it would be up to them to regroup with their teammates while avoiding, or engaging if they choose, enemy mechs.

This would be a chaotic game mode, and few mechs would be likely to reach their teammates unscathed by some enemy fire.

You mean this isn't what happens now? Mechs walking off in random directions like headless chickens? :P

I agree that this could be interesting for organized play.

I am sure the non-Comm'd, Pug teams, would absolutely love that mode. It would save the whole scattering bit at the start anyways. lol B)

Honestly with Pugs, it might give them a chance to mess someone up if they're actually good, rather than get focus fired by a four man.

It's an interesting suggestion, but it falls flat with voice communication, becuase there is literally no way you can stop people from using teamspeak and jumping in together. And once they do jump together, simply shouting: "I'm at XY." breaks pretty much the very essence of the mode.

How so? You can already see where your teammates are on the battlegrid, and they'll still have to get to each other.

It would cause chaos for 8 mans who are used to setting up in certain areas and moving as a group. In 8 mans, it would be a very fun mode, because it would separate the truly elite from the guys who have a highly specialized set-piece loadout. I do believe that most of the competitive 8 man teams are composed of very good individual players, who also work well as a team, which is more difficult than it sounds sometimes. It would just be fun for them as well I think, to find a rally point while ducking enemy fire and dishing out some of their own.

Can people handle chaos? Some teams could, others would be lost in the woods.

You would need much bigger maps than we currently have, but it could be interesting. Also you could do a more asymmetrical approach where the scattered mechs out weigh the defenders, who start more grouped up but with less weight and have to hunt the opponent. The idea being that their higher average speed and focused fire would outweigh the weight advantage of the scattered mechs.

They said Alpines will be a 12 by 12.

Caustic -- the current larger map -- is a 10 by 11, and we can only use a half of the "area" of the grid space.

Of the 10 by 11 space, Caustic only has a playable area 6 and 1/2 grid squares by 9 grid squares.

Let's hope Alpines uses more than a half of the given field.

I think it's a cool idea.

You could have a 1v1 battle for a little bit before reinforcements arrive. I think larger maps would be necessary first though.

Any other game mode would be welcome at this point.. Im especially excited about the asymetrical modes of planetary assault, which I think are sometime in 2013. ya!

I like the idea and it sounds simple to implement. It would be a little chaotic, but I think that the key would be to form up into groups of 2 or 3 and pick off stranded enemies.
