The subject sounds pretty obvious, but the tidbit I'd like to pass on to other is:

Q: If you unlock the Sensor Module in the Pilot Tree (500GXP) and then buy the Sensor Module in the Mechbay (2,000,000 C-bill), what happens when you later unlock the Advanced Sensor Module (7500 GXP)?

A: As of Patch 1.2.182, the Sensor Module loaded on your mech automatically upgrades to the Advanced Sensor Module. No need to spend another 2,000,000 C-bills.

I suspect this is true of the other multi-stage modules (e.g. Target Decay), but cannot confirm that personally (yet).

Hopefully this helps somebody else who's trying to weigh this investment.

I don't know about the part where the upgrade waits for you to load it into something, but otherwise "you will only every have one grade of module for a given model".

I'm guessing you're referring to my phrasing "...the Sensor Module loaded on your mech automatically upgrades..." In my case I happened to have the module already loaded, so I can't provide any evidence that purchased but unloaded modules behave the same way. I complete suspect that they do, though. Your bottom line seems reasonable (but I cannot prove it): You will only ever have one "Sensor" or "Target Decay" module, at whatever level you have unlocked.
