I have played MechWarrior Online for about a couple months. I started in December. However, I am taking a break for a little while. Because, of my underperforming computer. It does not meet all of the minimum requirements (weak video card specifically).
A friend and coworker of mine that plays First Person Shooter games told me that he would refuse try playing a similar game with only getting no more than 8.5 frames per second like I get with my computer. Nevertheless, I refuse to give up just because of that. A number of people with computer performance or lag issues try to depend on Streak Short Range Missiles. However, I refuse to use Streak Short Range Missiles and I do not like Lasers. Neither of those two weapons will help me get any better at using the weapon I want to get good at using. The weapon I want to get good with is the PPC.
With Stubborn Determination, and the Willpower to push myself to my limit and beyond is what makes me appear stronger then I look in real life. With this same mentality, I get more skilled in video games. This is part of the reason I like challenge. If something is easy. There is little reason to try hard. I will use MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries as an example. The AI has very bad Tunnel Vision. The enemy will not attack me as long as I keep my distance. I never had to learn to Torso Twist because of this.
Many people know that an AI is no substitute for playing against a real person. My experience with MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries compared to MechWarrior Online was no different. My experience with single player MechWarrior, BattleTech games, First Person Shooter games, and Combat Flight Simulators helped prepare me for MechWarrior Online only to a limited extent. It would be a different story if I had any multi-player experience in any of the MechWarrior games.
It has been a rocky start for me and I have a very long way to go. However, I am getting better at this game. Being, “Thrown to the wolves” and “Ran through the Gantlet” as a PUG has had a big impact on my BattleMech piloting skills. The skilled players here are an inspiration. Because of the skilled players pushing me to my limits and learning to play with the handicap of an underperforming computer. I am getting to the point where I am on equal grounds with the average player.

Well, I hope you get the means to upgrade your rig so you can return to the game and play it as it should be played

Stubborn determination will serve you well in more areas than just MWO.
If you like PPCs I would strongly suggest a Catapult K2, and keep the PPCs on the arms. Some people don't like the idea because they are vulnerable; but honestly, nobody shoots a catapult in the arms (unless it's an A1).

Anyone who has run the gauntlet and survived (I.E. didn't quit) is bound to see some sort of improvement to their game play. I know I did after playing enough matches, and now that I'm past 500 games being useful in a match is no issue.
Determination and Time is what you need for MWO. Give it both of those and you will see great improvements to your game play, and the game itself.

I am getting a new computer with incometax. I figure, that I will see an improvment in my own preformace with a good computer. I estimate a differance of 5X differance in my own preformance. With will put me at average or a little above avarage player.

Stibborn Determination has served me well in both life and in vodeo games.
My favorite Mech is the Capapult-K2 with four PPCs. I'm not good enough for it to be the Mech I am best in. But, being a good sniper is my goal.

Congratulations on surviving your baptism by fire. Just by achieving that alone places you far above many of your peers. You will do the Draconis Combine well in the future. You will see just how good you are when you get a better rig in the future. You might even find that the skills of the community are less then what you perceive.
