I have seen a lot of really great videos produced by the community. From NGNG's walk throughs to indoorman's mech videos and countless others. Is there a good free video editing tool out there. All i am looking for is something to snip the beginning and end of my recorded VODs and then put them together maybe even add a still image between videos.
I am recording with OBS at 5000 bit rate and when i put it into microsoft movie maker and snip say a minute off a 7 min video the file goes from ~100 MB to to ~200 MB and the quality doesn't look as good (youtube settings).
any suggestions?
Where am i going wrong?
What Video Editing Tool?

Moving this to the Player help sub forum, where it is more appropriate.

I use Cyberlink Powerdirector, it's pretty decent for basic stuff, has tons of effects and is comfortable to use.
On a more advanced level I guess you could go with Premiere Elements, for me though it was too clunky and had mediocre performance when editing.

I think Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas are the two most common ones being used around, plenty of other choices like the already mentioned Powerdirector.
Youtube has the tendency to screw up your video, no matter what you do to it. For me it seems to make everything darker than the original rendered file
The format you render into, bitrate and resolution used have huge impact on the file size of the finished file.

I love Premiere Elements(PE) it is powerful and I havent had issues using it- sadly at the moment Im making do with Nero Video which is functional. PE is not that hard to use if your used to Adobe stuff but can be a bit intimidating at first. Im debating if I want to upgrade to the most recent version as Im finally running 64bit OS
As to my videos and audio I record with fraps for gameplay and audio via audacity- looking into music making software (probably a tracker style app like Music Maker for me)
For Nero Video I seem to need to set the project to 1080p and then output as a mp4 3gpp to get it to play nice with youtube

I'm no expert by any means, but I use the free, open source and multi-platform, Avidemux to crop and transcode my fraps video into x264 with mp3 audio.

Yep.
It's because Youtube re-encodes what you upload, no matter what.
Here's a good article on uploading to Youtube: http://www.streaming...ults-83876.aspx
