Yes, it might be a bit hard to find a slot for that build in competitive 8vs8. But high dpm (albeit the jamming is very random) combined with good speed and maneuverability is a blast in pug battles. I like it when I have the speed to go back and stop the cap in case nobody else will

If you're not carrying two PPCs/ERPPCs on a K2 then you're doing it wrong. No space for argument, end of story. WRONG.
"No space for argument" means, it is not valid.
No, seriously, it's a question of personal taste. Before the Gauss nerf health, I carried 2 PPCs and one Gauss on my 2K, so I did more damage when sniping than a dual Gauss cat. Drawbacks were some of my firepower being in the arms, and a slight overheat problem, but that was totally worth the lessenes ammo dependency.
Now I carry 2 PPC, 2 AC/2, 2 M-Lasers, and am also very happy with that. The reason is, because of the small size of the AC/2s, I could squeeze more heat sinks in.

Always have a pair of medium lasers as backup.

I ran the twin Gauss build for a long time, but with the XL engine required to get them to fit, and the tendency of the Gauss rifles to take me with them when they were destroyed, recently I felt like I was dying too fast, of too little damage. I switched back to the stock engine (std 260) and quad large lasers. I found i was more often brawling than sniping anyway, so the extra damage soaking potential is welcome, and the quad LL seem to pack a nice punch at any range out to like 800M or so. I might try swapping two for ER PPCs and see if the extra heat is worth the extra punch, but I suspect the 4xLL is the sweet spot for my play style with this variant.

Can you still put CASE in torsos so unlucky explosion of a Gauss rifle won't destroy your XL engine? That makes sense.

AFAIK Case only prevents the damage from leaving the area where you store it together with the ammo. Thus it won't help you with an XL engine (you can't put Case in arms or legs).

This is only half true, as CASE in a side torso will keep explosion damage occurring in the adjacent arm or leg from reaching the center torso. But that CASE makes no sense for XL engines is absolutely correct.

So it's pointless to use XL engine, Gauss rifle in LT and CASE? CASE won't save from exploding Gauss to damage your XL?
Gauss in torso is just dangerous with the XL?

I'm sort of struggling with my K2 build. I'm currently running:
XL300
2 ERPPCs
2 LLs
DHS (HE = 1.18)
Endo
It's fast, but it runs hot and just lacks punch. It's surprisingly hard to kill anyone with this build unless they're already severely damaged. All this build does is get me a lot of assists, but it is largely underwhelming.
I might try a dual gauss setup next. Although everyone whines about it, a 2 AC/20 setup is far and away the most effective K2 build in my experience so far.
