This seems like a trick of limited value since it's banking completely on your opponent making the mistake of not being in counter mode. Strategies and tactics that rely on enemy mistakes are valid, but in the grand scheme of things they are extremely situational and their usefulness drops off sharply as enemy skill level increases. It's also completely useless if more then one enemy ECM is around.

That's why I had that little disclaimer at the bottom about there being many individuals who already know about it, and this topic is primarily informative. Flipping your **** to counter mode will disable this tactic, and if this post informs one other pilot on how to not die to this, then I've done my job.

Haven't been driving a lot of lights have you, most of the more dedicated pilots have been about that for a while.

I just want them to put knockdowns back in.

The Commando clothesline was always hilarious.

When I'm piloting my COM-2D and an enemy 2D or 3L appears and they do not immediately toggle into Counter mode for their ECM, here's how it works out:

I keep my ECM on to prevent lock (but I am also prevented from locking with my SSRM').

Prepared, I toggle my ECM into Counter mode and immediately lock and fire, then turning my ECM back into Disrupt mode while the missiles are in flight, thereby preventing the enemy unit from obtaining a lock and firing as fast as I can toggle my ECM.

This repeats until the enemy unit dies or realizes what is going on and flees.

I try to inform other light SSRM/ECM pilots about this in post-game to even the playing field but they tend to disconnect, so I'm posting this here to make people aware of the technique.

Disclaimer: I know many of you are bright individuals and already know about this, this topic is for the pilots who aren't privy to it.

TL;DR Just switch to counter. It "counters" this strategy.

Yeah it feels good killing a 3L without taking a single streak in return, but as someone else noted it only works on the lowest percentile of crap pilots.

Ecm vs ecm is still about getting on their tail and staying on it as long as possible while limiting the reverse happening. Throw in using obstacles to shake enemies and block visibility while your weapons are recharging. Plus the whole scouting thing while this is going on.

It's definitely the hardest class to play and I myself have not mastered it. However the performance gap between a great light pilot and a good light pilot is probably the biggest and most consistent in the game as well (to the point I don't think our lights have ever lost a 2v2 in hundreds of 8 drops). Whereas if you did a 2 medium vs 2 medium fight between great and good pilots, the good pilots would win at some tangible but under 50% rate.

Actually this seems to be about the most amount of skill I've heard of being injected into SSRM use... so um... score one for ECM for adding skill to the game?? I guess...
