That's my understanding. Simple enough to test yourself, just create a new pilot id from the game client and then log in to the forum a day later to check the dates.
Edit: Just checked, you can't create a new id from the client anymore.

Nope, the client and the forum profiles are directly linked (as you can tell, that you use the same log in data for both).

But people claiming to have created their profile through the game client back during closed beta can still use this as an excuse, I'm guessing. I suppose we'll stop accepting applications from people with brand new accounts.

Just drop with them and watch them do their thing. Should be pretty obvious if they have been been playing longer than a week and ability is more important than how long they've had their account, no?

Just to post the findings of my test.
I created a new account on the website just after my last post on January 31 but did not log in to the site after going through the verification process.
Logged in today to the forums with the new account and the forum profile say that the account just joined today.
Conclusion: The Member since XXXXXX shown on the forum profile is definitely based on the first time you log into the website / forum and not the date the account was created. Hence, the date of creation of an account can be different the date of joining shown on the forum profile.
