Has anyone figured out if this is possible to do? I'd really like to see how they're constructed and use them in a few personal projects, if it's possible to get them out of the game in a usable format.

For those of you who may be curious or want to do this yourself, I've figured it out... ish.
You'll need to download the CryEngine3 SDK (crydev.com).
Copythe Objects.pak from the MWO Game directory into the CryEngine3 SDK game directory (back up the one there first).
Open the bin(32/64) Editor.exe, create a new map, and open the Asset Browser.
Find the mech you want (objects/mech/<model>.cgf), and drag & drop it into the map space.
Select the model, File > Export Selected Geometry to .OBJ
This gets you only the model geometry - no LOD, no damage, no texture mappings, no animation skeleton.
From there, re-rig and don't violate copyright!

It is possible. Check in fan art Heffay's tutorial. I did it and it worked, tough there are a few issues with the model.
