I don't know exactly how XP works in MWO yet, but I have this suggestion.

From my limited experience of the game so far, smaller mechs don't have a whole lot going for them. OK, they cost much less, and they can be quicker and may equip jumpjets - but at the end of the day it's the heavy and assault mechs that do the majority of damage, get the kills and the big XP for it.

So why don't small mechs get an XP bonus to encourage their use? Perhaps mainly a GXP bonus so people wanting to climb the ranks quicker from the start will go for them.

Thoughts? Comments? Flames?

So basically, in a forum filled with thread after thread about how apparently overpowered Light mechs are due to speed, lag shields, and so on you've decided they need bonus XP because of...what? They eat Heavy and Assault mechs alive, what qualifies them for special treatment?

Like I said - my limited experience. I don't live on this forum like others so haven't seen the threads you've mentioned. Enlighten me.

I would have to disagree with you Deuce2400, in my experiences (i'm a light mech pilot) I find I have no difficulty whatsoever in out-damaging heavier mechs. I have the speed to out-manouever them and most light mechs have decent hardpoints to make good use of the weapons available. In any given match I am almost always in the top 4 and often 2nd or 3rd for damage done. My biggest weakness as a light mech? It's not assault mechs or mediums. It's other bloody light mechs.

If you are trying to play a light mech and it isn't working for you I would sugest switching to a higher weight class. Every weight class plays differently and caters to different playstyles, perhaps light mechs simply aren't your type of gameplay. I know for sure if i was asked to pilot an atlas i would somehow manage to get it to blow up by tripping and falling on my own missile pods.

Advantages of light mechs:

-Speed (this is HUGE)
-ECM shielding your allies
-Protected by the slight lag, making it harder for people to shoot them

With that said, please God do not give them an XP advantage. They have a role (scout, spotter, harasser, capper) and if played within that role they are extremely effective.

If you feel it's hard to get XP, I suggest equipping a TAG and having it on all the time. You'll get 50-100 extra XP every match from happy teammates who easier get locks and more effective missiles. They deal more damage, you get more XP and cash - everyone wins, except for the unlucky victim.

EDIT: TAG is also heat neutral, so can be a great way to make lights that otherwise might run hot a bit cooler while still maintaining usefulness (6 ML-jenner, I'm looking at you).

I have to agree with much of what is said here. each class of mech has its own advantages. and each player has their own play styles. Its best to start off playing mechs you feel comfortable in, and then learn how to play the other classes. When I first started, I was running lights and getting killed too fast. then I moved upto the MEDs and Heavy classes and had a much better game. Once I looked at how lights were being use by players who knew them, I tried them out again, and have done quite well with them. In fact much can be said for weapons types as well
