I'm a bad player, but I'm getting better and...

Ah hell- who am I kidding, right now I'm one of those worst players.

Founder (love the game, blah, blah). And I've heard all the advice, so please, no more advice here.

What I want to know is; Will I really get matches with "training" wheels on? Will ELO let me run around with all the other baddies? I want to run free with the other MWO crazies out there!

Please post here when you low-end players get to bite a chunk out of this new match-making system. Or just put it out there that your bad and proud.

Power to the baddies!

Yes, in theory you will be placed with others of the same apparent skill level.

This may sound sad but I think that you'll rather end up with griefers, afk'ers and TK'ers, people who don't just play 'bad' but rather not play at all. Even sadder is the fact that newcomers will have to go through that hell and learn the game playing there if they ever want to play with decent players. Not sure if many people will endure that grind to actually crawl out of that ELO pit.

If there are enough new players, it'd be really smart for PGI to match new players only with new players for 25 matches or so before allowing them to start using Elo. That way, if the new players are average or better, they won't have to deal with AFKers or anything like that, because all of those will sink down to below average.

you will not neccesarily get matches with ALL other players being at the same low skill level.

you will see a few things, however:
  • you will see both teams having a very similar total average Elo rating(it takes the whole team's average into account, not any single player's Elo score) so there will be much fewer one-sided matches
  • You will be stratified too far below the 'really good' players to see many of them in matches.
you can still be the lowest elo player on a team, and by being in the same randomly-determined group as a much higher player, you may be personally below the team average but ideally there are sufficient other good players to balance it out. you will still see some 8-0 matches just because the matching isn't perfect and because luck is still a factor.

What time of day you play will also be a factor, the fewer people on at a given time will mean the matchmaker has fewer people in the queue to pick, and so it will be forced to make un-ideal choices.

Actually, new players will start off playing average players. They don't start off in a pit, so any climbing they have to do will be to get out of someplace they got themselves in. Of course, I expect most new players will take some initial knocks to ELO but I doubt anything as drastic to put them into an AFK wasteland.

And we will -always- see 8-0 matches, because focused fire dominoes enemy teams.

What will likely (hopefully) happen is that people start at neutral, then move to negative or positive based on their ratings.

So AFKers, suiciders, TKers and other griefers get a negative rating, new players have a neutral rating, better players get a positive rating.

That would make sense to me anyway. No point in dropping the new players with the bottom of the barrel.

Enforced Class warfare!

"Betters" will get better.. because they will play with/against people who also care.
Baddies will get "badder" because they will play against other people who don't care and the AFKers/TKers...

Say hello to your future "Africa Clans." (Tankers will know...)

Hmm.. So maybe I will be in the "Not good yet, but getting better" zone in ELO? With the AFK and TK butt-munchers falling to a "New Low" as it where. Let's hope so.

I'm fairly good, but I lose roughly 60% of the matches I'm in.

This is great.

I get to have bad teammates and bad opponents, which means I'll have great opportunities for damage and kills, opportunities which I wouldn't have if my opponents were good (harder to kill, doing more damage to me) or if my team was good (steamrolling the enemy team before I can do much damage or many kills).

It might not be great to be a baddie, but it's great to be labeled as one!

EDIT Friendly reminder: it's spelled "Elo". It's not an acronym.

I think we'll have matches exclusively for TK'ers and AFK'ers, since their Elo rating will be lower than the bad players.
Bad player will be matched against bad players (I'll meet you all in the battlefield).
