While writing another post I had a sudden realization.

A common refrain on the forums is that the maps look too much like earth/terra, and not sci-fi enough. Maybe I haven't had enough sleep, but while I was playing alpine earlier today, it occurred to me it looked very familiar, very much like the area around where I grew up.

And just now it hit me! All of MWO's maps are based on BC (the Canadian province PGI is located in)... see below

Alpine Peaks = Revelstoke, or atleast the mountains around it
Forest Colony = Tofino/Ucluelet/Port Alberni
Caustic Valley = Kamloops with a green filter (explains the trees!)
River City = Richmond/Vancouver (Airport, river, seaport, bridges, condo building, highways... just needs a BC Ferry)

The only exception is Frozen City, though it brings back memories of a Christmas spent in Edmonton...

Speculating now...

Desert = Osoyoos? Maybe they will go a little further out of their comfort zone and it will look like Drumheller?

Anyone other westerners want to back me up on this?

(Obviously this post is in jest, though think about it and tell me you honestly don't see it now that I pointed it out)

It is the 31'st century, and mankind is once again... at war. Over Canada.

Actually, I think the planets all look like the ones in Stargate SG-1... Oh wait.

I thought about calling it a solution to making mwo "look more Sci-Fi" as so much of the genre has been filmed in BC over the last 25 years.

If that is the case, (Good thinking on the part of PGI.) I would suggest they look at Kings Canyon here in Central Australia. There are a lot of places that would be good for this game, all over the world.

EXACTLY.

The map designers are completely clueless on creating diverse landscapes.

Uh, BT battles took place all over the Inner Sphere/worlds. Being stuck on Earth is ridiculous.

Earth is not diverse ????? :) The smart thing is to use the diversity of what we have, thus shortening the time to make new maps. I have been around a lot of this country, and here alone I have seen landscapes that with a bit of different colour and vegetation, could well be from another planet. Just gotta use your imagination.

Well, in BT the vast majority of worlds were either 1) earthlike 2) terraformed to be earthlike 3) barren chunks of rock and or ice 4) hellholes filled with space-peasants that often resembled category 3 (see Trellwan). So, I guess its a fairly faithful representation so far.

On another note, what pieces of Canadiana would you like to see giant robots trample next?

The Battle of Tukayyid fought on the grain producing parts of the prairies?

Strana Mechty/Churchill, Manitoba?

Luthien/Sudburry? (the horror...)

Arc-Royal/Annapolis Valley?
