aside from elo can anyone tell me what the matchmaker uses to balance the teams?

At the moment, elo is the only determing factor.

This will change in two phases next week, though.

On 16th., elo will be changed, it was a little bit bugged, giving high elo players even more elo, wich caused longer waiting for game time.
On 19th., the maximum weight difference will be changed to 0, so only exact equal tonnage teams of similar elo are allowed.
If this causes too long waiting times, they will heigher the allowed difference in weight step by step.

The gist is right, But I need to clarify 2 points;

Elo is not the only determining factor. Right now, weight class is 3 stages based on priority with +/- 1 being the highest,  (+/-1,+/-2,+/-3) until all slots are filled.

The weight class allowance will be changed to 0, so Weight Class will be the biggest determining factor. This will not match mechs ton-for-ton, but will match them class-for-class. (3 Cataphracts on one team may result in 2 Jagers and a Catapult on the other)
