i have unlocked the basic red ... guess what ^.~

the darker, the better if you end on a night map in all other cases you can get what you want, because most people scan with heatvison on extrem ranges (at least that's what i do)

Camo does currently help in the following situations:
a) if you shut down a lot (deliberately, because unwanted shutdowns usually only happen when brawling)
:) at long distance if you are also in your team's ECM bubble, and not running hot
c) on Caustic Valley if you are between trees, since on that map heat view does not really work, at least to divert direct fire.

Personally I like to use camo patterns but with flamboyant patterns, for the dazzle effect. This does not hide you, but will make it more difficult for the enemy to target specific locations on your Mech.

I dunno about EVERYONE using thermo vision. On the occasions when I spectate, I would say that less than half the people are using thermo.
So if the enemy is not using thermo, cammo can be useful in a few situations.
When you are outside of radar range. Not everyone has extended range sensors.
People also tend to target perceived threats first also, so a bright orange stalker near a cammoed stalker is more likely to get shot at initially. I find my med gray/light gray hunchie gets away with a lot more than my red/orange clown paint hunchie.
If you are running with an ecm mech, it can make a difference.
Is being cammoed a make or break thing? no. Its probably not a huge deal overall, but I will take whatever edge I can get.

EDIT: I tend twards using lighter neutral colors if I want cammo in this game. Most maps have lots of white, and light gray backgrounds. The ones that dont tend to have water, and natural colors. I use a nearly white gray, a medium gray, and light beige usually. Sometimes I throw in some muted red cause I like it :P

Be careful trying to find universal camo. The Army did that, and look how it turned out. The picture below is the only thing I've seen that a soldier can hide in.

As to your question, I think you're on the right track about colors. Problem is, it's hard finding a color that will work on a wooden map, a snowy map, a rocky map, and an urban map, since those are vastly different colors.

The Air Force pattern (ABU) is even worse. You couldn't even hide on that couch with it.
AND it's not as fire retardant as BDUs or DCUs...You know how people can burn stray threads off BDUs with a lighter? No one does that with ABUs.
So they designed a separate uniform (ABSG) for people who might see combat.
Great use of taxpayer money...

For me, picking a camo pattern is a creative outlet. (Though not a very cost-effective one.)

Still, I agree with the point that not everyone is using thermal vision. I might use it to find the enemy in the first place, but - maybe this is just me - I think my shooting is even worse with thermal or night vision.

So, camo might still serve the purpose of breaking up your outline, or to delay the enemy's attention until after they've already picked another target.

Even if that is debateable, I'm still going to avoid bright colors that will draw fire.

With the new thermal vision modes camo is definitely useful, since for long range you need to rely on un-augmented vision.

I didn't think about this really until I started piloting my highlander heavy metal. Bright pink does tend to stand out.

-----------

Titanium White blends in at a lot of the maps.

This is Titanium White, Titanium White, and PC Gamer Black. Blends in well at all snow maps (in the snow), and on Caustic. Blends kinda-sorta on Tourmaline Desert, does okay among buildings in River City.

Exactly. Red, white and blue is ours. We started the whole thing, then all you other countries came and stole our colours. You filthy thieves!

The problem is that at long range all mechs are black. By the time camo really has any noticable effect, you`re practically already withing brawling range.

For example that cat blends really well... but at the 150m distance pictured, no amount of camo would save him ;)

As a result, I generally go for intimidation. An atlas in obsidian black phranken with a red skeleton and pphranken black trim bearing down on you at 63kmh is NOT something the enemy generally sees and says "yuhuu, an easy, safe target that I can shoot at all day"... judging by the seemingly paniced reactions of most that get surprised, "HOLY ****!!!!" *reverse**twist**run* seems to be the more common result.

er, are you sure those are the 3 colors? seems like a camo tan would be in there...

Yep. There's no tan. Back then I couldn't afford tans. That's white.

There's a yellowing lighting filter on Caustic Valley.

Though that makes me wonder when they will do a vertical version of mountain line.
