After thinking about issues with mgs being ... Less than awesome, I think that reducing a "unit" of ammo to weigh 0.5 tons and carry the same number of rounds that one ton of ammo does now would go a long way toward making them usable.
This would put them more on par to a med laser in ton vs weight vs use.
the new half ton of ammo would still take 1 slot.

In theory this is a great idea. In practice it will never happen since it fraks up canon designs.

They could just double the ammo in a one ton ammo pack, and then have optional half-ton ammo packs with the standard amount. So the standard ammo pack comes with 2000 bullets for 1 ton and the "Light Machine Gun Ammo Pack" weighs .5 tons and come with 1000 bullets.

Also, they don't cause any weight, so right now they're supposed to be on par with a small laser - .5 weight for the MG/SL, and then 1 ton for either 2000 bullets or .1/.14 heat per second reduction (which means if you fire it about 1/5th of the time, a single DHS will keep the small laser heat neutral).
