So I've been thinking about it and I'm not sure I want to move straight from the briefing to the reveal. I feel like I should give everyone a chance to react to the briefing before moving us to Bay 3. So putting it to the vote: How do you want to handle it? Some time to think and chat amongst yourselves or move straight on?

Forward it is. I'll *try* and get a post out before work today, but absolutely zero promises. It'll be up by Monday.

Unfortunate scheduling has removed my ability to write when I wish, so I'm behind on posting. Working on the post at the moment, but I doubt I'll finish before I need to sleep. With luck perhaps I can finish tomorrow night!

Cool surprise Rogue!
Are you waiting of anyone's post in particular or should we all clamber into the pods and await instructions?

And then I remembered Thom and Shep don't check the Skype chat...
The plan at the moment essentially amounts to 'My next few weeks iRL are going to be entirely nuts' so it's a straight up FFA between you all. I don't really mind what the specifics are, it's just the lot of you shooting the hell out of each other. I'd personally recommend picking one of the old MW4 maps or an MWO one - of course the latter isn't exactly balanced for FFA, but I'm sure you can work something out.
Sorry for the utter lack of guidance, but RL happens
Essentially I have a few friends who may be moving to Birmingham and am trying to get them jobs, while working, and then possibly moving into a flat with them...and so on. At least now you'll be able to do some stuff ;)

Ah, righto. Should really do that ;)

And that sounds like a clever idea. My recommendation for a FFA would be Crimson Straight. Open areas for long range firefights and city areas for brawling if it comes to it.
So, should Thom take charge and get us saddled up so he can address us pre-battle?
Also, how are we going to decide the victor of this little soiree?

I have no idea what any of the MWO maps look like, but I suppose I could look them up on youtube or some such.

Crimson Strait

I've never played MWO either, so I don't know what that map really looks like from the ground. How deep is the water? Is the SE corner of B3 passable? Is there some sort of tunnel between D4 and D5? Etc, etc, etc. But I think I can wing it well enough.

Forgive me my speculation, but. . .someone has to start the ball rolling. :D

Thom 'Bad Luck' Frankfurt: A Solaris veteran and Champion, Thom knows the last man standing format inside and out. Will he hold back to test his new warriors or will a natural competitive streak win out? Gamblers looking for the safe bet should put their money here.

Cees 'White Wolf' Anthonissen: A nobleman and Academy graduate, Cees has likely had access to, and spent plenty of time with, a wide variety of simulators and is used to their quirks. However, it sounds like it has been some time since he has seen any action, simulated or otherwise, so there may well be some rust here. I see can Cees harboring a burning desire to win in order to avoid embarrassment, which may or may not end up working to his advantage. Given his focus on leadership and tactics, Cees may well be a better small unit commander than a straight up free-for-all MechWarrior.

Li-Hua 'Spokes' Taishu: A team player used to adapting to the strengths and weaknesses of her lance mates, Li lacks the experience and mind set needed to compete in a free-for-all environment. An intuitive pilot who drives by feel and is adjusted to a specific BattleMech, Li typically does poorly in simulators. Add in an unfamiliar control scheme and the complete lack of uprated Scorpion variants and it's highly unlikely Li is going to place very well in the final rankings.

Juri 'B.B' Kutsuu: Perhaps more used to working alone than most of the others, Juri may well go into the sim with something to prove. She has the skill set needed to place highly, especially if played from a "where did you come from?" angle.

Andrew 'Doc' Wheeler: A veteran pilot and survivor, Wheeler may well run into issues finding himself alone again in battle, even if only a simulated one. Nevertheless, Andrew has spent time competing on Solaris, so he is used to the free-for-all format. I would expect his simulated Mad Cat to be a fully kitted Clan war machine, so Wheeler may well be a very dangerous opponent.

Adrianna 'Dove' Delfino: A test pilot used to simulators and piloting unfamiliar 'Mechs, I see Adrianna adapting almost instantly to the controls. Though perhaps not as used to the free-for-all format as some of the others, I imagine she has participated in quite a few "one-against-many" engagements as a test pilot and might well be capable of giving Thom a run for his money. However, I expect her to be more focused on learning the simulator (and her fellow MechWarriors) than on winning. Expect her to place highly, but not come in first.

Azman 'Reptile': A wild card with the devil's own luck, who knows what fate has in store for Azman in the sim. Perhaps he will fall asleep at the controls, only to have Thom and Adrianna score simultaneous headshots and wind up being declared the winner without having ever moved from his starting location. :)

*Applause* Nicely done, Spokes. I've been kicking around idea's for whatever I'm going to cobble together.

But me being me, and Thom being well, Thom, I keep coming to the conclusion that Thom isn't going to take the first sim run seriously. Methinks that he'll end up taking advantage of the programmed mech types as basically a way to test drive new designs that he hasn't had access to.

That or, a chance for him to step back into a BJ-3 for nostalgic reasons and take a stroll down memory lane. I'm having probs picking a design like always.

Either way I'm expecting him to be aloof using hit and run tactics while you guys whittle each other down, unless you guys gang up on him or something else unexpected. And otherwise familiarizing himself with the simulator layout.

I believe Mac is pretty much out the RP, Azman still hasn't made an appearance. Thom, I'm giving you full control of the ball o' whackiness that is Azman until her return. I'll chat to Mac about what he wants to do or who he'd like to control Juri.

Quick answer to those questions.
Yes, all water in the map is passable. The lake and pond in the corners of B3 are about knee deep for a hunchback.
The depth off the coastline is quite consistent, only going up to armpit depth on a hunchie about D1, E1. Everywhere else is about waist deep at most.
Sorry Spokes, but the Scorpion might have to doggy-paddle :o
There is a railway tunnel running from under the multi-tier docks in D4, in a shallow arc emerging lower B4. Access tunnel 3rd entrance lower left B4.
I might run through the map on training grounds with fraps or shadowplay , showing off the salient points and post to youtube if we decide to use it and care overmuch.

I like the idea of Azman just winning by pure luck. Cees will certainly try quite hard as you've correctly assessed, but I don't think listening to a young Steiner noble gloating would be good for group morale. He'll be quite keenly assessing for individual strengths and weaknesses though. He'll be using a stock UZL-2S for the sim. Should be no issues configuring the pit to match his cockpit as there are next to no functional modifications in his spanking new Defiance Industries mech :)

The sim pods are non configurable - you may not move the hardware around at all. They would most closely resemble the cockpit of a Chameleon. They're generic, easy to learn layouts. You should all be familiar with them/a similar model if you've attended any kind of academy.

Dude. What the Hell did these MWO guys do? It looks like it's going to be a nightmare trying to keep tabs on all our role plays.... Maybe it's time to move our games elsewhere?
