Killing things doesn't necessarily translate to winning.

Actually, no. Unless there is 16 people of the same ELO waiting for a match, he gets thrown as a filler to compensate for the low elo of his teammates.

When, as Adridos said, you get thrown in as a filler for a low Elo group that's been sitting in a queue for a while, communication attempts are usually an exercise in futility. Most of the time you can tell at the beginning of the match - when you see half of your team alpha-striking the terrain for no apparent reason, you can bet your favorite Atlas that you've just landed in Elo hell.

Sorry brother but you're the one that brought up ur stats in a game that is still in beta, with unbalanced matchmaker, unbalanced weapons and no in game chat. Just hang in there, the future looks bright.

alternately, win more and you should die less, which should inflate your kdr. which is cause and which is effect? who knows?

This means your KDR is a very limited reflection of your performance unless you only take part in completely even and fair duels.

Dogma from those with a low K/D or easily buy into things.
1, K/D takes every match you fight into account(unless you don't kill and don't die).
2, Every lost game will probably show up as Death. You have equal opportunity to turn the tides of the battle as your teammates. < This is representative of skill.
3, To get a kill, you have to be alive when it happens. If you position yourself bad, and die amongst the first in either/both win and lost games, your K/D will be lower. < This is representative of skill.
4, There are very few idiots who go for skillshots even after ~500 matches, so you need not to count those baddies in.

In those ELO of Doom matches try to find the most deciesive point on the battlefield and get there first; then fire a few shots, call out enemy spotted with ECM, anything... folks come a running when they think there will be something to kill.
Think of it as herding cats by waving tuna

588 games with all mechs that have more than 20 matches played.
Mostly solo or 8-man drops included.
Not a lot of correlation between win/loss and kill/death.

If K/D was removed the only stat that would matter is the win/lose stat. Win/loss being the only stat would make it the most important and you might actually see pilots fill the roll each mech was intended for, instead we see players ignore the fact that people are capping their base and hunting down mechs with no weapons for a kill to boost stats.
Your k/d wouldn't look bad for standing on base and dying to prevent cap while the rest of the team got there to clean them up. You would win, ultimately making the one and only stat something to show off.
K/D promotes self-centered play, I also, find myself worrying about it even though I preach that it isn't as important as a good win/loss ratio.
Imagine no cries of "kill stealer" or a pack of lights fully capable of getting to your base in alpine ignoring it because of a wounded Atlas. QQ if you like, but if k/d was gone this game would be one step closer to being one of the best examples of a "TEAM" game.

1) Mount high damage weapons ... AC/20, Gauss, PPC ... when striking a vulnerable area (like red center torso) ... high damage weapons have a greater chance of delivering the killing blow if your aim is good.
2) Intentionally hunt mechs with red torso sections ... CT for all mechs, LT/RT for ones with a likely XL engine. Lights with a red leg. If a person concentrates their attacks on the weakest opponents the odds of getting the killing blow go up. Of course the K/D is pretty meaningless since it only indicates who struck the final blow and not significance of the contribution to the kill.
