A heavy or assault will be nice at this point given that if you include the Wolvies and Griff's, that weight class already has more then 50% more options then the others.
I would rather see a Grasshopper, Ceaser, Banshee, or Cyclops at this point rather then the Vindi. Even though I love the Vindicators.

That's a Clan 'Mech. Odds are, you're not seeing one of those in the pipeline till July at the earliest.
The Capellan in me is quite happy to see our signature "Badger" get on the short list, however. It's a 45 tonner that if they follow the Raven, will have the 1X...which means a medium with a ballistic, energy AND missile hardpoints. -1AA. -1R, and -1X right off the bat please!

Because all IS 45 tonners available in 3051 except for the Wolf Trap have jump jets. The Wolf Trap has only one variant at the time anyway.
Hatchetman (melee weapon, only two variants available)
Blackjack (We have of course)
Phoenix Hawk (HG so forget about it)
Vindicator
Wolf Trap (AKA fail CN-9D, one variant)
Wyvern (Only two timeline available variants)
So guess which 45 ton 'Mech we get next? When they decide to release it. What 'Mech they release next is anyone's guess.

What is this short list you speak of? Is there a list floating around with mechs the devs are looking at implementing?

Of the possible variants, the VND-1R (as the common/default variant) is a must, and the VND-3L (as the TRO 3050 "recovered LosTech" variant) is highly likely (IMO).
The VND-1X is unique in that it is the only one with a ballistics hardpoint (from the Machine Gun in the Left Arm).
The VND-1AA & VND-1SIC could be easily remade from the VND-1R (which, given its base 180 Engine rating and the 1.3x multiplier for Medium 'Mechs, would have a maximum Engine rating of 235), though the 1AA might make the cut due to its unique higher max Engine rating (around 295).
There's also the question of a potential Hero Vindicator...
