Cataphract 4X

I've tried 4x AC2, ghost heat killed it.
I've tried 4x AC5 and was ok.
using 2x AC2 and 2x AC5 right now and it seems to be better but I want to know what else can work well.
1 ML
I've really slow, XL245 engine, still not making kills but plenty of assists and 300-600 damage a round.
for some reason I expected more for the kind of sustained damage these setups can do. I feel get more done with my firestarter with 3 ML and 1 AC5.

why the ultra AC/5 vs the regular? what is the difference?
NM..
so Ultra could do 10 points per cooldown until it jams on you and you are out of using it for 5 seconds.
I guess i just suck with the mech for one. the low slung arms are problematic and it is so wide I often hit objects to the side without realizing.

I set mine up for trigger 1 being the UAC5s and trigger 2 the AC5s; when I shoot someone I just tap trigger 1 every 1 second or so while holding down trigger 2. By doing this I reduce the chances of it jamming and end up doing 30 damage every 1.5 seconds instead of 20 with the quad AC5s, and 22 with the twin AC2/5s. The lowslung arms can be problematic so you want to avoid the tops of hills and instead go around them. I also stick to my assaults letting them soak some damage while I dish it out (kind of a symbiotic relationship).

Not really, 7 tons of ammo is good for 1050 damage which is plenty to wreak the enemy team if you can aim. The ML is for piece of mind but you can dump it for another ton of ammo.

I tried the 4x ac5 and did nothing for me, although it seems to be well liked by many people.

Here's my favorite part about it: it's the only Cataphract with zombie hardpoints. Cataphracts have huge arms, and with 1 HD + 2 CT hardpoints, the 4X has the most zombie hardpoints in the game. With a standard engine, a properly piloted 4X makes a Centurion with the old hitboxes look easy to kill.
I wouldn't say that you should never use XLs in a 4X. I've done it myself, and found it to be very effective, but I feel like that essentially turns the 4X into a slower Jagermech with worse arm positions (not a bad thing if you don't want to buy more mechbays for a Jager though.) The way I play a 4X, it ends up being a brawler with sniper capabilities, rather than a true dedicated sniper.
My usual build looks something like this, but I've also found this one to be surprisingly effective. It's a weird playstyle, but I enjoy it.

I still need to work on torso twisting and trigger discipline. Starting a brawl weaving and twisting, with 20 damage alphas ever 2 seconds or so and the occasional laser salvo, and finishing it with the Ultras on Full Auto... On the occasions it has worked, oh my, it has worked wonders!

There is only one thing better than 4xAc5 and that's 3xAc10.
Pfff torso twisting in dps mech. Just spam those guns, ppl will duck.

fixed ha.
I agree 4 AC/5 just decimates mechs, use them as a long range AC/20 or chainfire them for complete enemy meltdown.

My Muromets gets dual Gauss, so the 4x uses a ac/5. Both are equally deadly.

I did dual Gauss in my Ilya as well for a while, the added speed was nice but my 4x ended up back with the dual gauss since the gauss range made up for its lack of speed.
My Ilya I run 3 uac5 and a ppc with a ml for backup... bit meta but works well for me. I will admit I am tempted to cheese it up with a tripple ac10 on it though.
