Hi, im new to the game and i really liked it. Anyway, i saw a video on the tube with a guy playing as the locust. He somehow got it up to like 169kph while i can only get it up to 153kph with a xl 190.

is the locust speed nerfed or something?

There's a mech skill called 'Speed Tweak' that you need to unlock to give a boost to your speed. To unlock this you'll have to buy 3 different Locust variants and attain all of the basic skills on them, after which speed tweak will be unlocked and purchasable.

No. He probably has three diffrent locust with the basic and elite skill trees done. The speed tweek elite skill give your mech about 5-10hpk faster speed depending on engine. Once you elite and have speed tweek on your locust you'll hit the same speed. The hardest part about the locust other than weakest armor in the game is that with max engine you only have seven tons give or take for weapons, ammo and extra equipment like bap or artemis.

Jedi you're late!
*Shows up as if I'm not late.*
Anyway as said, once you bring 3 Locust variants (they must be different variants) to Basic skill levels on the Pilot Skills tree, you can then begin unlocking the Elite skills. Among them is a faster shutdown/start-up for whenever you get too hot, a 'speed' tweak, a faster firing rate, and 'convergence' is completely useless at the moment. (The 1 second to align your weapons has been removed from the game).

Good luck with your Locust, and remember speed is ~not~ everything. That's pretty much nothing.
Being dangerous is and not getting hit is everything.
Examples of being dangerous (until I get hit) :
Hard hitting AC/5 Locust.
ER PPC Locust.
LPL, Streak, LRM Locusts.

Of course there's nothing terribly wrong with the traditional sort of Locust.

Just don't forget the BAP (Beagle Active Probe). Streaks suck when you don't have one of your own.

Note that the mech, while super fast, is one of the worst in the game. If you want to go super fast, you should seriously consider buying a Commando or Spider instead.

Unless you know what you are doing, have at least 3 months of playing Lights I do NOT recommend playing the Locust. It is fragile like glass, it has very few guns and requires you to stay on your toes 24/7.

VERY IMPORTANT! MUST READ

The Locust is NOT a bad 'Mech. It just requires a LOT of skill, situational awareness and tactical genius.

If you do not have these, stay as far away from it as possible.

Apparently now the Commando is faster than the Locust, which makes precisely no kind of sense whatsoever and I hope is something that will be rectified.

I agree. With stock-based engine standardization (one of the few things I'm working on to pitch to PGI in the feature suggestions), the fastest mech is the Locust. The second fastest is the Cicada, followed by the upcoming Flea (using stock info from TT), and then several others. The Commando, while reasonably fast, relies on its incredible turning radius and arms instead, easily able to bob between buildings that no other fast mech can do.
