I literally smh at this all the time.

People never lock targets. I've specced people going head to head with another mech and never locking them up. This happens all the time.

You're denying yourself help from friendly missiles, and more importantly, denying yourself valuable information.

I've seen a guy in a phract, going up against a KFX or something, as the only two mechs left. He didnt even bother to lock the other mech up.

So he doesnt know which parts are most damaged, is he set up for close quarters or ranged combat etc.

I just dont understand it.

Because their steering wheels don't have an R key.

Lock your own targets, bring your own TAG.

Why?

Because we're putting ourselves at risk every second our faces are exposed to the enemy. Do you really think we're going to risk that for you to maybe shoot and miss? No we're shooting, juking, and trying to make mince meat out of the enemy while avoiding or spreading the damage around ourselves.

While i know the benefits of locking targets, i often do not bother if there's ECM close (but not in range yet), or just in the enemy team. Why bother locking when you're losing it soon anyway?
Yeah, i don't see my target's health but then i rarely try to kill people, just damage them as much as i can before i have to get away.

Friendly indirect-fire missiles do not need their targets locked by friendlies (only the firing unit), they need a friend with line of sight to the enemies.

The R key is your friend, and serves more than just locking targets for your team's LRMs. In addition to the benefits already mentioned, spamming it a few times when you see a group of enemy mechs bearing down on your team's flank or rear will hopefully get your team's attention (this is in PUG matches, of course).

"I just stare at things and they lock for me." <---- the last thing you want to hear in a pug match.

Well, then don't complain when the amount of help you get is minimized.

LRM boats need to learn to get their own locks. Whenever i played with a Catapult, i wasn't lazy and locked my own targets.

I really think the LRM ranges should be reduced to 660 meters like they're in the board game, this would put them in range of other long range weapons...

Why do people not lock targets?
Why do people peek again and again on the same spot where they've been receiving fire?
Why do people fire lurms that are not hitting anyone?
Why do people walk in front of a firing Dire Whale that's your teammate?
Why do people cramp single file and not allow to back up?

No one knows, we just deal with it and hope that the world will improve with all our forum posts, guides, and occasional rage thread :)

This is so stupid.

I run a HBK-4SP most of the time, no LRMs on it. Guess what? I can't help you if I don't know that you're engaged with someone, and unless I happen to be standing right next to you, I won't know you're engaged if you don't bother targetting the enemy you're fighting with.

Target the enemy, let me see where you've hurt him, and I'll run over there and do my best to put my shots into the same place you've already hit him.

Or, don't target him. Watch as he targets *you*, and all of *his* buddies come streaming in to pound your face in.

Well there is not locking targets because you are an idiot and then there is not holding locks because you don't want to face tank the enemy and therefore are getting shots off then returning to cover. As an LRM boat you need to get your own locks, or sit tight until a brawl ensues and then you should be in good shape to get targets.

I always lock targets but holding the lock end exposing myself longer than necessary is lethal.

when I want to target, I shake it up and down

It is the most annoying thing in PUGs....and I've seen it in the group queue as well. New players who don't know the value of the paperdoll.

They just shoot willy nilly, never focusing on a particular hitbox. It makes me sad, and lose the game.

The first and foremost thing on any pug's mind is "don't be the weakest link", which the score board does a marvelous job in shaming such players with low damage. Hence, they spam, and blame all the kill stealers on LRMs.

I always lock my targets to see where to shoot and what they are carrying. Maybe I want to cripple their main gun first or press my range advantage, short or long. Or maybe I want to check to see if my shots are even registering before I waste my armor on a bugged mech. Sometimes you can see that a mech has nearly full armor at the end of a battle, so you get help.

MWO doesn't really punish players for being noobs. The mechs are fragile so tactics never develop into anything serious. It's perhaps counter-intuitive that stronger mechs and more realistic weapons make for real tactical consequences, but they do.
